Brand acquisitions began with an investment in the Toronto-based M•A•C Cosmetics in 1994, which the company then acquired in 1998. Bobbi Brown Cosmetics, designed by the celebrated makeup artist, was acquired in 1995, as was La Mer – along with the original recipe for its supreme luxury product, Crème de la Mer, containing the nutrient-rich Miracle Broth™. The company ventured into its first hair care and holistic beauty brand with Aveda in 1997. The renowned fragrance house Jo Malone London was acquired in 1999. Plus, the business remains in the family, which probably explains why the ingredients and formulas have stayed consistent for so long. The cosmetics empire’s namesake, Estée Lauder, was actually born Josephine Esther Mentzer. She started by concocting homemade face creams on her own and testing them on women at beauty salons while they were sitting under the hairdryers until she officially launched the Estée Lauder label with her husband in 1946 in New York City.

Estée herself quickly became the face of the brand, growing it through valuable interactions with customers. The brand skyrocketed to international fame by introducing new and exciting products in skincare, makeup and fragrance, always with Estee Lauder makeup women’s needs in mind. It’s not the first time companies have sent their products to the space station. The hotel brand Double Tree sent up its famed chocolate chip cookies and Pizza Hut delivered pizza back in 2001 on a cargo ship.

Clinique products are sold in more than 100 countries and generate millions of dollars in revenue each year for its parent company. The cosmetics giant will pay $17,500 per hour for the astronauts to take photos of their serum in space. Coincidentally — or not — the Space Station orbits the earth at 17,500 miles per hour. I loved being able to take the knowledge gained by smaller internships/jobs and applying them to a large scale company. I received a lot of good advice about the marketing sector of the company despite being a communications intern. Though Lauder passed away in 2004, her legacy lives on in her products, which are found on millions of vanities today.

Nearly a decade later in 1991, Estée Lauder upped the ante on its own formula for the first time, reformatting Night Repair with proprietary anti-oxidant technologies in the new, fancier-named, ANR Protective Recovery Complex. This advanced formula worked double shifts — day and night — helping to boost the skin’s natural renewal process at night while strengthening skin’s natural resistance to environmental damage during the day, the brand explains to TZR. In 2009, the formula relaunched as ANR Synchronized Recovery Complex with the introduction of the brands Chronolux Technology, and again in 2013 as ANR Synchronized Recovery Complex II.
