Casio’s G-Shock Rangeman offers all this and plenty more, but feels like a very serious outdoors watch. The Mudmaster takes the key features, makes them easier to use, and will appeal to anyone who enjoys a weekend hike for a few hours, and likes to add a little tech into it. No 55.4mm-wide, 53.1mm-long, and 19.3mm-thick watch will be as comfortable as the Mudmaster GG-B100.

Many of the other G-Shocks now have this and I would happily pay another $100 for a slightly bulkier and solar powered version. Even with the Bluetooth power drain Casio could maybe create a hybrid set up and have a replaceable battery too to help when the watch is using a lot of features . Tied in to this I’d also love to be able to use the LED for longer because its so bright its useful as a nighttime camp flashlight when going to the toilet in the middle of the night. There is a digital stopwatch function available from the push button menu and there is also an alarm set and countdown timer function too.
Yes, the case is a whopping 53.1mm wide and 19.3mm thick, but like just about all G-Shock watches, it’s ergonomically curved and light on the wrist at just 92g. For a price of $350 retail, the Mudmaster GGB100 offers a healthy dose of the G-Shock brand personality and experience, a ton of functionality, and genuinely tough watch you don’t need to worry about. The bluetooth smartphone link, however, makes a lot of sense and genuinely enhances the user experience in several ways.
However, it’s left out of a watch that is marketed to spend its life outside and will force you to change them roughly every 2 years. Like most G-Shocks, the Mudmaster comes will all the standard features, a stopwatch feature, 5 alarms (with snooze!) and 31 world times. Maybe even the g shock watch extreme sports guys wouldn’t use these features, but they’re there and fun to use in daily life. Like the Yeti SP5C Bike, the Casio is made for extreme conditions and abuse. It takes its name from the Mud Resist system of gaskets in the pipes that keep mud and dust out of the watch.
Certainly, we see Casio continuing its iterative approach to product improvement by building on what they have done in the past — but having said that, this G-Shock is radically different from models made just a few years ago. New features, such as Casio’s use of carbon material, as well as the new case construction, mean that the look and feel of the GG-B100 are worth experiencing even if the model isn’t right for you. Casio did an excellent job, and I find myself liking the GG-B100 as a product as much as I did the G-Shock GW9400 Rangeman. The G-SHOCK Mudmaster GG-B100 is a purpose-built, bombproof watch for all outdoorsmen.
Going back to the dial, legibility is excellent for an analog Casio watch. Casio’s work on contrast as a concept on analog dials is getting better and better each year, and the brand is still producing designs that are visually engaging and detailed. I do, however, want to see Casio work with better luminant in the future. They probably don’t put too much stock in it since this and all other G-Shock watches have a bright white LED backlight for the dial.
Even basic Casio watches require a little learning, but all the functionality offered in these more feature-packed models can be overwhelming to use with only the few buttons available on the watch itself. From within the G-Shock Connected application, you can control various settings and displays, set alarms and timers, and customize the watch’s modes. The smartphone link further allows the time to automatically update when changing time zones as well as adjust the timekeeping accuracy. An Activity Log feature uses the phone’s positioning and the watch’s altimeter to track activity, but it seems like most smartphones alone would be able to accomplish this. It will be more useful if future versions of the watch are able to perform these kinds of things autonomously like some smartwatches already can.
