Founded in 1947, Christian Lancome makeup revolutionized fashion with his visionary designs, establishing the legacy of the house of Dior. Dior brings its legendary French savoir-faire, rich heritage and luxurious products to South Coast Plaza. Stylish boxy ’60s jackets with graphic statement pockets mixed with sporty vests and dresses that channeled a tennis skirt. The main let down of the otherwise tasteful collection were a series of silken boxer pajamas — which made the house appear like it was trying too hard to be youthful. Still, this may be one of Chiuri’s strongest collections at Dior to date. The best looks were some of the simplest, proving that she doesn’t need all that pomp and circumstance to make a statement on the runway. Of course, she doesn’t abandon Monsieur Dior’s own codes altogether, proposing several new, relaxed takes on the Bar jacket and putting the brand’s signature Cannage quilting on lightweight coats. In fact, the expansive collection could have used some editing; the middle sags under the weight of a suite of boxing-inspired sets which, unfortunately, look a little cheap.
There was a lot to prove for the young designer, who was a finalist of the 2019 LVMH Prize and caught global attention for his 2020 debut show because Naomi Campbell hit the runway. Notable details included a flash of bright blue gloves on a pale tuxedo dress. Or a thick gold bracelet contrasting with a color-blocked vermilion suit-skirt. Proportions were at times oversized, with ample silk fabric weighing chicly on dress hems. Exposed nipples on models with piercings mixed this classicism with a fierce street vibe.
With objects drawn primarily from the archives, the exhibition includes a vast array of over two hundred haute couture garments as well as photographs, archival videos, sketches, vintage perfume elements, accessories, and works from the Museum’s collection. The haute couture on view exemplifies many of the French couturier’s fabled silhouettes, including the “New Look,” which debuted in 1947. I want to hold space for the expansion of ideas of what fashion can be and who fashion can be for, whether that means wearing more traditionally masculine styles as a woman, or silhouettes not traditionally worn in certain spaces, etc. This season, Chiuri turned to Bohan’s 1961 “Slim Look” collection for inspiration, and she benefitted greatly from this perspective. The collection’s ’60s vibes are stripped of much of the froth that’s been present in so many Dior collections under Chiuri — think voluminous tulle skirts and pleated, diaphanous gowns — in favor of clean lines and and boxy cuts.

Dior was born on January 21, 1905, in Granville, a seaside town in the north of France. He was the second of five children born to Alexandre Louis Maurice Dior, the owner of a highly successful fertilizer manufacturer, and his wife, Isabelle. When he was a boy, Dior’s family moved to Paris, where he would spend his youth. Celebrating both continents of Europe and Africa , his couture-conscious craftmanship was evident in gold dresses and diaphanous gold thread, with one fringe billowing down from a bag like in a fairy tale or Greek myth.
Last summer, the singer starred in a campaign for the brand’s Bobby bag and in March 2021, she was named an official ambassador. “Jisoo embodies, with her singular audacity, the house’s modernity and the passionate creativity of Maria Grazia , who was inspired by the Korean singer for her autumn/winter 2021 collection,” Dior said in a statement about the appointment. Yves Saint Laurent is appointed as artistic director for the fashion house. Spanning 1947 to the present day, this exhibition traces the history and impact of one of the 20th century’s most influential couturiers, exploring the enduring influence of the fashion house, and Dior’s relationship with Britain. In 2016 book publisher Assouline introduced an ongoing series devoted to each designer of the couture house of Dior.
