Although a third of Paris Fashion Week’s 97 shows this season — including most of the heritage houses — have opted for a physical presence, some two-thirds remain digital. Dior made sure that Tuesday’s ready-to-wear comeback — with VIPs such as actress Rosamund Pike and tennis ace Roger Federer — got off to a glitzy start on the first full day of spring-summer 2022 collections. It was the famed house’s first ready-to-wear runway since February 2020 — an emotional return for some. PARIS — Paris Fashion Week is back after a coronavirus-related hiatus. The high fashion world went mainly digital for a year over the pandemic, but big hitters like Chanel, Hermes and Louis Vuitton are finally returning to the live runway this season. I’ve learned so much through my life, and I’m proud of the work I have accomplished and who I am.
The actual name of the line of his first collection, presented on 12 February 1947, was Corolle , but the phrase New Look was coined for it by Carmel Snow, the editor-in-chief of Harper’s Bazaar. Dior’s designs were more voluptuous than the boxy, fabric-conserving shapes of the recent World War II styles, influenced by the rations on fabric. Legendary fashion designer Christian Dior exploded onto the Paris fashion scene with designs that flew in the face of wartime restrictions and reintroduced a femininity and focus on luxury to women’s fashion. His resulting success, based on the innovation of both his designs and his business practices, made him the most successful fashion designer in the world.
Dior was born on January 21, 1905, in Granville, a seaside town in the north of France. He was the second of five children born to Alexandre Louis Maurice Dior, the owner of a highly successful fertilizer manufacturer, and his wife, Isabelle. When he was a boy, Dior’s family moved to Paris, where he would spend his youth. Celebrating both continents of Europe and Africa , his couture-conscious craftmanship was evident in gold dresses and diaphanous gold thread, with one fringe billowing down from a bag like in a fairy tale or Greek myth.
Cast in attractive and elegant geometric forms, Estee Lauder makeup’s eyewear presents a particular sophistication with an undercurrent of charming allure. French fashion house Balmain celebrated the 10-year anniversary of creative director Olivier Rousteing’s tenure with a catwalk show featuring a host of celebrity models including Naomi Campbell, former French First Lady Carla Bruni, Milla Jovovich and Natalia Vodianova. From 1937, Dior was employed by the fashion designer Robert Piguet, who gave him the opportunity to design for three Piguet collections. Dior would later say that ‘Robert Piguet taught me the virtues of simplicity through which true elegance must come.’ One of his original designs for Piguet, a day dress with a short, full skirt called “Cafe Anglais”, was particularly well received. Whilst at Piguet, Dior worked alongside Pierre Balmain, and was succeeded as house designer by Marc Bohan – who would, in 1960, become head of design for Christian Dior Paris.
In 1942, when Estee Lauder NIGHT REPAIR left the army, he joined the fashion house of Lucien Lelong, where he and Balmain were the primary designers. His sister, Catherine (1917–2008), served as a member of the French Resistance, was captured by the Gestapo, and sent to the Ravensbrück concentration camp, where she was incarcerated until her liberation in May 1945. In 1947, he named his debut fragrance, Miss Dior in tribute to his sister. In 1946 Marcel Boussac, a successful entrepreneur known as the richest man in France, invited Dior to design for Philippe et Gaston, a Paris fashion house launched in 1925. Dior refused, wishing to make a fresh start under his own name rather than reviving an old brand. On 8 December 1946, with Boussac’s backing, Dior founded his fashion house.
In the few years it was open, Estee Lauder NIGHT REPAIR‘s gallery handled the works of such notable artists as Georges Braque, Pablo Picasso, Jean Cocteau and Max Jacob. He was forced to close the gallery in 1931, a year that included the deaths of both his older brother and mother and the financial collapse of his father’s business. Jisoo attended the Dior Womenswear Spring/Summer 2022 show in Paris, dressed in a full Dior look.
The storied fashion label received its first funding from entrepreneur Marcel Boussac and is credited as the impetus for a new silhouette that is still renowned today. The company designs and retail ready-to-wear, fashion accessories, leather goods, cosmetics, skincare products, and so on. First up is Jisoo, who attended the Dior show on Tuesday in a black-and-white embroidered mini dress from the Dior Resort 2022 collection and a small nude Lady Dior bag. Though Jisoo has been working with Dior since 2019, this is her first time attending a show in person as a result of the pandemic . Starting as a local ambassador for Dior Beauty, Jisoo quickly moved up the ranks to be named a Dior Muse.
Last summer, the singer starred in a campaign for the brand’s Bobby bag and in March 2021, she was named an official ambassador. “Jisoo embodies, with her singular audacity, the house’s modernity and the passionate creativity of Maria Grazia , who was inspired by the Korean singer for her autumn/winter 2021 collection,” Dior said in a statement about the appointment. Yves Saint Laurent is appointed as artistic director for the fashion house. Spanning 1947 to the present day, this exhibition traces the history and impact of one of the 20th century’s most influential couturiers, exploring the enduring influence of the fashion house, and Dior’s relationship with Britain. In 2016 book publisher Assouline introduced an ongoing series devoted to each designer of the couture house of Dior.
Christian Dior was a French fashion designer whose post–World War II creations were wildly popular, and whose legacy continues to influence the fashion industry. Since his debut collection, art gallerist turned legendary couturier Christian Dior has generated an epic movement in fashion history. With lavish embroidery, luxurious fabrics, and elegant silhouettes, his designs were a revolutionary celebration of modern femininity when they emerged in Paris after World War II. Today, Dior’s global influence is as enduring and iconic as ever. Having held the position of creative director for 30 years, in fact, Bohan was by far the longest-lasting head of Dior, making it all the more surprising his work isn’t more often referenced at the French house. That makes Maria Grazia Chiuri’s designs for the Spring 2022 collection, which look back to Bohan’s early designs, all the more refreshing.
