However, as I recall there was a sweet aspect to it back in the day. I have no idea what notes I smelled. I thought this might be one of those frags that I would take some time to enjoy, but I actually love this one on my initial testing. In the dry-down, there is woodruff, although it’s not listed. This is not at all unpleasant – I’m not sure why so many people count it among their most hated fragrances. It’s mostly floral on me, with mild notes of pine, vetiver, and wood.
It lost that something special, those truly rich and deep notes. Todays version, it’s quite obvious that the quality has been stripped from it. Very similar to Paco Rabanne pour homme but it lasts much longer and doesn’t have that gross soapy opening pour homme does. I wear this a few times a month but with the current formulation I can get 12 hours out of this.
What I really would like to know is in what respects does the “Modern Reserve” differ to the “After Shave” splash on, and the “EDT”? Fragrances like this are a symbol of maturity and a solid strong personality; just made for men that are not looking for compliments but to wear the fragrance they only appreciate and love. Perhaps this sort of thing made a lasting impression on me as a kid – Brut and soap-on-a-rope for Xmas, I don’t know. But I’m learning that the woodsy/green/leathers with earthy patch/vetiver/oakmoss drydowns are usually winners for me.
This is a very good fragrance and a grown-up classic for sure. There is very little out there today that smells like this. But that being said, Polo is a classic.
Not exactly “sexy” positive, but “unique” positive, in a good way. All you need is the ’78 Firebird and to unbutton your shirt revealing a hairy chest to complete the polo dress shirts picture. Smells green all day long – if you would like something more cleaner and less daring then floris 1962 is an option. A true Masterpiece of art in fragrance.
The tobacco note in Polo, as elsewhere, only serves to make me love this more. Got a 237ml bottle of this as Xmas present to myself – ‘cos I is werf it. The big talk about this one is reformulation. Now if you do some research, there are Warner, Cosmair, and Luxury Products versions of Polo. The Warner is the original formulation with the best longevity and performance. The Cosmair is the more balanced scent version of the 3 formulations.
