This is such an intoxicating scent that it becomes you. Once you grow up with this, your standards are so much higher in what you expect a good edt Polo Ralph Lauren t shirt to be. This is something millenials just don’t understand. Look if God had his own perfume house, then this would be the garden of Eden scent.
Polo lent an air of legitimacy to American made fragrance releases and reasserted it with its clothing line. A truly American original that put American fragrances on the same par with European colognes and re-defined the barriers of the industry. This is a milestone in men’s perfumery. Probably the most classic and the most masculine of all men’s fragrances. I’m only surprised that according to the pyramid, the pine needle and leather notes are in the mid-section, as I feel as though I get a blast of them instantly. That combination, to my nose, are what this perfume is all about – super-fresh pine modified by a soothing, rich brown leather.
What I really would like to know is in what respects does the “Modern Reserve” differ to the “After Shave” splash on, and the “EDT”? Fragrances like this are a symbol of maturity and a solid strong personality; just made for men that are not looking for compliments but to wear the fragrance they only appreciate and love. Perhaps this sort of thing made a lasting impression on me as a kid – Brut and soap-on-a-rope for Xmas, I don’t know. But I’m learning that the woodsy/green/leathers with earthy patch/vetiver/oakmoss drydowns are usually winners for me.
Someone may suggest to give the benefit of the doubt to the seller, maybe the seller does not know she is selling counterfeits, maybe I got a counterfeit in a batch of good product. Maybe, but I find such difficult to believe, and very unlikely that my product was one ralph lauren t shirt of the few counterfeits in a batch of good product. The most likely scenario is that she has a large batch of counterfeits, whether she knows it or not. Please hear me out, All too often I find myself cringing at the site of well-established men wearing bad fashion.
It lost that something special, those truly rich and deep notes. Todays version, it’s quite obvious that the quality has been stripped from it. Very similar to Paco Rabanne pour homme but it lasts much longer and doesn’t have that gross soapy opening pour homme does. I wear this a few times a month but with the current formulation I can get 12 hours out of this.
I’m not sure what the perfumer originally intended to evoke with this scent but in the light of typical colognes these days I smell a pipe smoking hairy lumberjack. Not a pansy rich polo player with palm olive hands. Kinda makes me wish I was in high school in the early 80s when this was a normal everyday scent. I remember seeing the bottle as a kid thinking that that’s what men’s cologne looks like. Vintage Cosmair Polo is by far the king of all fragrances . I purchased my first bottle in 1982 and I couldn’t get enough of it.
Wear it with a Polo shirt and aviator sunglasses or a pin stripe suit and power tie. My relationship to Polo Ralph Lauren might be summed up as “love the sin, hate the sinner”. To me, this perfume symbolizes the masculine ideal of the lower-upper-middle class suburban man of the 80s. He is that guy who was the first on his street to get a Macintosh home computer . He bought a small sailing boat at some point . He was an “Atari democrat”, but the last time he voted blue was Al Gore in 2001 (he’ll say he voted for Biden but that’s a lie).
Polo tried hard to add flankers, red, blue, that weird orange one. Keep producing just this in that vintage green bottle and I’ll be happy. I’m surprised how little I want to use but it’s because I need to keep this bottle for the rest of my life. This is definitely a barbershop type fragrance; I’ve used aftershaves which smelled very similar. It’s quite nice, but it’s not my favourite of this genre, or at this price point, so I’m not likely to get a full bottle unless I come across one at a yard sale or for pennies online. I wonder if some of the older formulations would have impressed me more.
This said, I would never ever wear this. I can’t imagine any occasion that would be suitable for it and it smells way too outdated. The dark grey suit and lace-up leather shoes come next with the tortoise-shell rimmed glasses and that handsome mustache neatly trimmed. This fragrance is fresh, grassy and pleasant, but I can’t go out smelling as immaculate as, uhm, the Virgin Mary. If my nose had no association with that, I would have loved this for everyday use. It has a great longevity and good sillage.
Still smells great but unfortunately for me my stepfather still wears this and I have a hard time wearing this and feeling like it’s my own. I only wear this around the house occasionally in the fall and winter months because I love the smell. This is my wife’s favorite of all my fragrances and will always have a place in my collection. The dry-down maintains the green, woody vibe, and the patchouli, oakmoss, vetiver, leather and tobacco keep it dark and mature.
