It’s deep green and herbal, a kind of spicy chypre. It smells like nature, very much like a forest (I’m not sure if the intention here was to evoke a polo playing field or meadow). This is the kind of fragrance that they don’t make now (unless it’s niche). I own two formulas – a bottle from 1997 and a bottle from 2014. The so called “vintage” is heavier on leather and has much darker pine note.
When it dries down it evolves into elegant leather that’s still infused with green. Some one said that it smells like death. I completely agree because it is plain herbal smell with no unpleasant or pleasant effect. This neutrality gives it a status of ‘only for men’. My perfume journey started with this perfume around 25 years ago.
The Luxury Products reformulation is the current formulation being sold today, needless to say it is the inferior of the 3. A class in a bottle, stands on its own and is a trendsetter – a one and only green and leather chypre with a huge load of tobacco. This is the worst fragrance I’ve ever smelled. I’m not sure what went wrong – but I don’t believe people actually wear whatever I smelled.
Polo green is one of the best fragrance in my collection. The Polo Ralph Lauren brand is part of the wider circle of Ralph Lauren lines and represents the sportiest and preppiest of all the ranges available from this internationally renowned name in fashion. Premium denims, impeccable tailoring and vintage-inspired classics are all combined to define the Polo Ralph Lauren style, which continues to evolve to catch the eye of contemporary fashion fans.
Putting on my quarter zip sweatshirt 2 days after I had taken it off I was immensely surprised to smell the PERFECT dry down of Polo. If there was 1 scent that I would want to smell like, regardless of day, time, season or circumstance, it would be this one. Ultra-hyper masculinity in a bottle. The handsome, fit, complete and versatile man. A traditional man, a loyal man, a good father and a loving husband. This is my absolute favorite winter fragrance.
Also, the presence of personal body funk (or the dreaded ‘older man smell’) can render this fragrance just a really ugly air pollutant. I’m sure encounters like this have turned more than a few people against Polo. I think men who have a strong natural smell to their person are better off with a fresher fragrance to wear.
On the initial spray you definitely get the pine and the patchouli, almost overwhelming. As it dries down you keep some of the “forest-y” smell from the pine, but the “green” smell dies down and evolves into tobacco notes. polo dress shirts As a result I get a “grandpa’s humidor” vibe after the first couple hours. It’s very green, very woody, and there’s a heaping helping of leather and tobacco hanging out very presently to support those green notes.
Pine, wood, musk, tobacco, leather, but almost immediately settles into a “dirty talc and spice” feel. It is green with the smell of fallen leaves in Jungle. Current formulation is absolutely wonderful. Pine & oakmoss wrapped in ambery-balsamic green leather.
