I associate it with my dad which is why it feels like an ‘old’ fragrance, but it definitely is dated regardless of that association. I feel limited wearing this as a lot of people I come into contact with don’t like it. Friends that have smelled it often have a face of disgust and say that it smells like a grandpa, or that it is strong, but I rarely have experienced someone actually liking it. Best way I can describe it is that it smells like money.

When it dries down I detect notes of ashy-smoke and leather, with the pine needles becoming part of the background. The top and middle have a somewhat dry chypre vibe. It’s a bit dirty at this point but that’s part of its appeal and what gives it character. It’s simultaneously rugged and classy.

The scent has definitely changed over the years, and I am fortunate to still have a Cosmair 4oz spray and 8oz splash that I will never use up, because I have so many other fragrances in my collection now. However, when I want to go back in time to the greatest green, leathery, mossy performance beast of my young adulthood, I reach for this classic. I haven’t tried the most recent formulation. I hope, for the sake of this legend, that it is better than what has been offered for the previous few years. All others should bow down before the great green Polo god. There are more than enough reviews here covering the way it smells, so I won’t go into that, except to say that this smells fantastic. Another old-school powerhouse I am very glad to have added to my growing collection. If it makes me smell “dated,” I am perfectly happy with smelling that way. It is one of my favorites, and what I think of when I heard the term cologne.
I tried the new version of the original, which is needless to say, very very different. Fresh, earthy, spicy scent wrapped in dried tobacco leaves created for the MAN of the 70’s and 80’s, I used to wear Polo Ralph Lauren t shirt more in cooler summer days. This is a love from me and I believe that if you love greenness, nature and green, spicy, herbal, grassy fragrances generally, then you will love this. Definitely one to try and wear first. Still a great and unique smell even today.
This scent is soo good and takes me back. Every time I spray it, I think of my friend, and playing with our Star Wars figures back in the day, which is nice. Everyone needs a few anchor-points back to their young and carefree days, and funnily enough, Polo Green has become one of mine from a memory I will always look back on with a smile. My poor ERG forever stunk of Polo Green after that, the smell literally never vanished! Back in the day this stuff was a whole forest crushed and compressed into liquid form and then crammed into a bottle! My uncles signature for over 30 years.
