Of the actual Huffy bikes post 1970, there are some dependable transportation available if you know where to look. Cycling on the Cheap is about finding the right mode of transportation as cheap as possible, and for many, a Huffy might make sense. Most likely these will not be light in weight but will get you from point A to point B and have the added advantage of being largely theft proof.

Huffy Bicycles was founded in 1892 when George Huffman moved his sewing machine factory to Ohio and decided to build his first bicycle. When George’s son, Horace, took over the firm in 1924, he began selling bicycles under the name “Dayton.” In 1949, the company created a children’s bike called The Huffy Convertible. Firstly they released the hugely popularHuffy convertible bicycleinto the marketplace. This was the first bicycle to be sold under the “Huffy” brand name. Schwinn, the company that had so smoothly rolled with the times in 1909 by making the first childrens bicycles, after Henry Fords Model T automobile erased the adult market, gagged on mountain bike dust in the 1980s. The company was left holding a historical footnote as the new off-road market took off, missing the majority of bike profits.

The company holds 25% to 30% of the U.S. market, the largest single share. It plans to continue making bicycles with partners around the world. I have a very romanticized vision of riding a bike – perfect sunny day, no crowds and no hills. The Huffy Men’s and Women’s Cranbook cruiser bikes have many features in common. Huffy Cruiser bikes use coaster brakes to bring your bike to a stop.

I would not buy a new one, but rather scout out a used one at garage sales; Craigslist or the Bike Project and you just may have the perfect campus bike. Of course, it is good to have a place schwinn bicycles like the Bike Project to help keep these bikes tuned up, as many of them did not come off the store shelves properly tuned. They tend to be more reliable than other department store brands.

According to research, aggressive riding is a faster way to get me to burn even more calories than ordinary cycling. Caught between cycling for fun and cycling for fitness, one thing was clear, I loved riding bikes. Sometimes, I just need to get somewhere fast, other times, I just want to breathe some fresh air. The company did well in the 1980’s and grew substantially, however, they had trouble breaking out of the entry-level price market with their bicycles. With the Convertible Bike, Huffy introduced the world’s first training wheels. Lighting up children’s eyes and making parents proud as the idea of “learning to ride” took on a whole new meaning.

There are also several Raleigh-made three-speeds and Carlton road bikes that were imported by Huffy which are very nice. Huffy, for much of the 1930’s to 1960’s, manufactured bicycles that were equivalent to — if not as fancy as — Schwinn, and they have found a niche among collectors. The older Huffy bikes were quite nice for their era and can be a great pick-up, if you can find them at a garage sale or craigslist. If someone unilaterally says that all Huffys are junk, there are several examples of quality or dependable bicycles you can refer them to. “Yeah I guess I had a good time on my date the other night, the girl was nice but she gave me a total huffy.”

The Convertible bike was also first to bear the nameplate, starting in 1953. Dayton bikes by the Davis Sewing Machine Company evolved as we put a new brand forward. Our rides were now called “Huffman bicycles,” leading the way for our transition to becoming the first name in fun. 1977– The popularity of the Thunder Trail bike made Huffy the number one producer of bicycles in the United States by 1977 and all of the laid-off workers were called back. Net sales for 1977 were $130 million, a 21 percent increase from the previous year.

Schwinns image was stodgy, from dusty, garage relic Varsity 10-speeds, or for collectors, a faded brand responsible for 1950s Black Phantom cruisers or 1960s Sting-Ray Krates the father to the BMX bike. Even with its proud history, Schwinn had trouble redefining itself as a mountain bike company. If you are looking for aesthetically pleasing cruiser bikes, then you can get one from Huffy. This bike brand has been around for a long time and is known for its traditional bike style and design for quality cruiser bicycles. You will get a variety of options for cruiser bikes for women, kids, and men. Huffy Cruiser bikes are quality and affordable bikes with cool features for both kids and adults.

There are also a line of professional level BMX bikes that the company released in the 1990’s. But that was not always the case for the company based out of Dayton, Ohio. There are certainly some quality or dependable — and in some cases, collectible — bicycles made by schwinn bicycles. They have also made some decent “basic transportation” bicycles if not exceptional rides.

Where they had previously held a 30 percent share of the $1.5 billion U.S. market, they saw their profits plummet. I know in my time as a bike mechanic, Ive spent more time than I wish to consider struggling to adjust flimsy derailleurs or brakes on some neon-painted duel-suspension imitation. Ive nearly thrown out my back lifting the thick-walled steel frames onto the repair stand.
