I ride flat bars 30 – 40 miles at a time, and it’s very comfortable. I’m currently looking at a fitness bike- composite frame, Shimano 105 gear set and flat bars. with end grips, I suspect I will be just as fast as I would be riding drop bars. comfort and safety is much more important than speed.

Wheelbase sort of takes care of itself, in most cases. It won’t track as well on loose surfaces as a longer wheelbase bike. This is why downhill mountain bikes have gotten progressively longer over the years. Longer front ends and longer forks make the bikes track straighter giant mountain and more stably.
