As seen of giants website the talon 2 has 2×9 rear shifter. A review of ANY bike is flawed without mention of weight. A comparison over Talon would have been useful to find out how much weight saving would be achieved by spending more money. This review provides no more information than Giant’s own web site. In fact given a previous comment, it suggests inaccuracies.

I think it’s beyond stupid for bike manufacturers to be putting 32t chainrings on every single 1x bike they sell. I mean, sure, it means they’re only needing to stock one chainring size for assembly which reduces their cost, but that’s not the size that most riders are going giant mountain to need. The wheels consist of Giant’s own brand GX03V rims and quick-release hubs and are shod in 2.2in Maxxis Ikon tyres. Tektro mechanical disc brakes are exclusive to this cheapest model. It features the same 6061 single-butted aluminium frame as the rest of the range.

2 – If that isnt sufficient, I can get a rear groupset with a wider range cassette by either Eagle or Microshift that will fit my current hub. As I approach $200 am I getting close to other options that make more sense? Can I add a swap out a really low gear on an existing cassette? Not sure if this is even possible, but trying to make this work with what I have. Microshift doesn’t show all of the Advent 8spd bits on their website, either. It’s worth noting that the 9spd derailleurs, anyway, come in 1x and 2x flavors.

The gearing in the Talon 2 is handled by a Shimano Altus 2-Speed at the front and Shimano Acera 8-Speed at the rear.

Throughout the range of sizes, reach and stack are on the short and high side of the spectrum. Compared to the Marlin 7, which skews toward the aggressive side with a longer and lower fit, the Talon 29 2 gives riders a more upright riding position. If this is a little more bike giant mountain than you need, the Talon 29 3 has the same aluminum frame hung with cheaper components to bring the price down to $550. If you prefer 27.5-inch wheels, the Talon 2 and the Talon 3 have identical builds and prices to the Talon 29 2 and Talon 29 3, but with 27.5-inch wheels.

Fox float 32 does an excellent job soaking up the terrain. This bike climbs like a mountain goat but gets a little squirrelly coming down fast. Likely will replace the bar, stem, and seat post with carbon in time.

The quality I’ve experienced for the price point ($570)is spot on. No issues and it took all the abuse a newbie who has only finished 4 rides without a crash of some sort. I would defiantly recommend this bike to anyone starting out in the sport. It’s given me the bug and I’m sure it will last me many years. I would definitely recommend this bike as a beginner to intermediate choice with a fork upgrade.

It’s fair to say that the Talon 2’s transmission is its greatest strength. Based around Deore and XT 10-speed components, it’s a slick and reliable setup that should stand up well to the rigours of year-round British riding. For the money, it’s impossible to fault – and it’s backed up by Shimano brakes too. The Schwalbe tyres work better in the dry than on damp British trails, though. The rear end continues the theme of pedalling efficiency.
