Its plastic case is practically weightless if you’re used to wearing an even a modestly proportioned 316L case. By design, the strap is angled down so that there’s little room at any point between the 48.5mm case and the watch. There’s something else notable about the case, and that’s the Carbon Core Guard tech that’s incorporated. The case is constructed with a thin layer of carbon fiber in order to bolster its strength so the overall amount of material used in the case can be decreased, without sacrificing any sort of material strength. The Carbon Core Guard doesn’t change the feeling on the wrist, but it does inspire a sense of confidence that the watch would be fine even if it were run over by a car. So what we’re left with in terms of real world use on the dial is a pretty functional two-hander.
The GA-2100 does that in spades, and at a price point where this small luxury won’t be painful. It’s not only an affordable G-Shock, it’s the most affordable one in the entire range at $99, and that includes purely digital and ana-digi models. While this is a full featured G-Shock with timers, alarms, multiple time zones, and so forth, that, to me, isn’t what this watch is all about.
It’s still not a small watch by any measure but it’s proportional and looks great on any size wrist. It has been nicknamed the CasiOak because of its resemblance to the Royal Oak by luxury watch brand Audemars Piguet. The Casio G-Shock GA2100 is much thinner and more compact than the usual high sitting, singing and dancing G-Shocks. This is almost a stylish gentleman’s watch and I think it’s going to become one of their most popular models.
While Casio nostalgia raiding my brain might explain the appeal of this watch for me, I also want to talk about case’s dimensions, and how they’ve been slimmed down from typical G-Shocks to make the wearing experience completely different. Well, for me, it has something to do with it’s unapologetic brashness as a statement watch. They get a lot g shock watch of heat from enthusiasts because they rose to popularity with the endorsement of pop culture figures, athletes, rappers, and the like, representing something like a “real” Royal Oak but for less discerning, younger tastes. Unfortunately, most of the affordable analog G-Shock watches do not have the seconds hand, but the more expensive ones do.
Personally, I find the GA A1 to be a fine daily watch, but only if I’m using it for the sole purpose of telling the time. If I need to use the digital functions or need to check the time at night a lot, then I would prefer to use another G-Shock. (Other GA-2100 models would be better suited for nighttime use than the GA A1.) For me, the GA-2100 could never be my only watch, but I’m happy to have it as part of my small collection. The use of the Carbon Core Guard structure allows the GA-2100 to be the slimmest G-Shock of all current models. The height and width of the watch is considered mid-size, rather than the large size of most analog G-Shock watches, and the watch wears very light and comfortably. The GA-2100 is currently the lightest analog-digital G-Shock model at 51 grams.
