I’m usually wearing watches around the 40mm range as that’s my sweet spot so you would think that the big jump in size would be awkward but it’s not, it feels just right on my 19cm (7.5 inch) wrist. If you’re used to wearing G-Shocks that usually come in at around 50mm in size you’ll find the new GA-2100 to be quite a bit smaller and more compact. The new GA-2100, also known as CasiOak due to the case’s that resembles an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak, breaks away from the square-shaped case. While the G-Shocks have been analog before, the GA-2100 presents the handset front and center, consistently overtaking the digital display and giving the watch a familiarity that mechanical watch collectors will love. The G-Shock GA-2100 case and bezel comes with Casio’s own blend of resin and carbon fiber. They call it Carbon Core Guard structure because it is so light and strong.
But speaking of the case, this is where it sets itself apart from other G-Shocks. Rather than a big, blocky, overbuilt style, its octagonal shape gives it a more distinguished look (a “royal” inspiration, if you will), which ties in well with its ana-digi design. Its face features large indices and contrasting hands, while its date complication is represented with a subdial at the 9 o’clock position rather than as part of its digital display. Said display is in a sleeker angled window at the 4 o’clock position.
Sumerians believed in an anthropomorphic polytheism, or the belief in many gods in human form. There was no common set of gods; each city-state had its own patrons, temples, and priest-kings. Nonetheless, these were not exclusive; the gods of one city were often acknowledged elsewhere.
In particular, carnelian beads with an etched design in white were probably imported from the Indus Valley, and made according to a technique of acid-etching developed by the Harappans. Lapis lazuli was imported in great quantity by Egypt, and already used in many tombs of the Naqada II period (c. 3200 BC). Lapis Lazuli probably originated in northern Afghanistan, as no other sources are known, and had to be transported across the Iranian plateau to Mesopotamia, and then Egypt. This advanced metrology resulted in the creation of arithmetic, geometry, and algebra.
Fans will easily recognize it as a G-Shock, but at the same time, it doesn’t scream “G-Shock” to others. High-strength resin material, which is reinforced with carbon fibers, makes it possible to create a case that is a mere 11.8 mm thin, which is the thinnest among G-SHOCK combination models. The “BAR” value indicates the number of atmospheres to which water resistance is ensured.
Ecologically, the agricultural productivity of the Sumerian lands was being compromised as a result of rising salinity. Soil salinity in this region had been long recognized as a major problem. Poorly drained irrigated soils, in an arid climate with high levels of evaporation, led to the buildup of dissolved salts in the soil, eventually reducing agricultural yields severely. This greatly upset the balance of power within the region, weakening the areas where Sumerian was spoken, and comparatively strengthening those where Akkadian was the major language. Henceforth, Sumerian would remain only a literary and liturgical language, similar to the position occupied by Latin in medieval Europe. Although short-lived, one of the first empires known to history was that of Eannatum of Lagash, who annexed practically all of Sumer, including Kish, Uruk, Ur, and Larsa, and reduced to tribute the city-state of Umma, arch-rival of Lagash.
The strap is really of high-quality rubber and it gives a premium look. The Casio G-Shock GA-2100 range comes in three main colors – all black , black with some gray accents, and all red. OK, an entire week with only the popular G-Shock Casioak as a wrist buddy has been refreshing, but what about the dark blue suit / white shirt get-up I’ve got planned for a cocktail party? On Zoom – again, but with the laptop at a distance and the occasional stand-up toast, my choice g shock watch is clear, making the threesome a glittering foursome (God save me if my wife read this, a week of top models and threesomes…) . The GA-2100 is interesting because the dial and case seem to all be part of the same object, as opposed to being distinct elements that make up a complete timepiece. Here is where the Royal Oak comparison actually makes the most sense – that’s a watch whose style is built on a harmony between the angular case and its integrated bracelet.
Zach is a native of New Hampshire, and he has been interested in watches since the age of 13, when he walked into Macy’s and bought a gaudy, quartz, two-tone Citizen chronograph with his hard earned Bar Mitzvah money. It was lost in a move years ago, but he continues to hunt for a similar piece on eBay. Zach loves a wide variety of watches, but leans toward classic designs and proportions that have stood the test of time. The GA-2100’s slimmer case profile is matched by a strap that has been streamlined to match the rest of the watch’s proportions. This, in one sense, is a subtle difference, but changing up anything on a watch that has direct contact with your body will tend to have major consequences when it comes to real world wearability. What we have here is functionally a time only G-Shock – I have almost zero interest in becoming more comfortable with the little screen.
The sword shaped hour and minute hands are the only components of the GA-2100 that are not red, thanks to some lume that could be stronger, so they stand out quite well. The twelve indices around the dial’s perimeter are in a slightly lighter shade than the dial’s base, and they’re raised, giving the dial a bit of depth and lending an extra touch of legibility. While not something you’d wear as a dress piece (unless you’re being willfully transgressive, which I’m on board for) the case has an undeniable ability to slide gracefully under a shirt cuff. There’s a novelty in this that long time G-Shock users will find endlessly amusing – to hold it in your hand is to understand it’s built to the same tough standards as every other G-Shock, but it’s light and thin enough to very nearly forget about. The GA-2100 has already been dubbed the “CasiOak” all over the watch internet, and other similar mashup nicknames are out there as well. But Casio has been making watches in loud colors in this general shape for years, so why does the GA-2100 suddenly seem to have claimed the mantle of Royal Oak on a hot dog budget?
