Looking back at our testing results, one thing becomes crystal clear – the 860 EVO is the second best performing SATA SSD on the market. The only better performing SATA SSD is Samsung’s own 860 Pro. The 860 EVO easily outperforms competing SATA SSDs including more expensive MLC powered competitors. This testing is just to see what the drive is capable of in an FOB state under optimal conditions. We are utilizing empty volumes of Windows bit and Windows Server 2008 R2 64-bit for this testing.
The 860 Evo shares the same controller and the amount of DDR 4 cache memory as the 860 Pro. It’s also available in similar capacities, ranging from 250 GB to 4 TB. The 870 EVO is also slightly quicker than the 860 EVO at maximum sequential writing speed.
It wouldn’t be much of a surprise to start seeing 6TB or 8TB SATA SSDs in the near future but the speeds probably won’t improve too much. Like its predecessor, the 860 EVO comes in capacities as high as 4TB, however the lower end now stops at 250GB. The new 860 EVO leverages the same 3bit MLC 3D V-NAND as the 850 but comes with an updated Samsung MJX controller.
Best of all, this 2.5″-format internal hard drive features SATA connectivity, making it an easy upgrade for any compatible computer. With sequential read and write speeds of 550MB/s and 520MB/s respectively, this can freshen up any PC, helping it boot faster and decreasing load times in some games. Looking at performance, we see a rare misstep for Samsung. Generally speaking Samsung is a performance trend-setter in end-user computing, which has been the case with many of their SSDs. With the 860 EVO, although perhaps harder hit with the lower capacity version, the drive falls flat under performance-heavy workloads. In our test/dev SQL server benchmark the EVO only had 353.6 TPS and an average latency of 37,673ms.

It recorded a score of 4981, which was only 17 points off from the top-performing Samsung SSD 850 Evo. Looking at the actual speeds, the WD Blue SSD managed 274.26MB/s, which makes it over 34% faster than the Plextor M7V and OCZ Trion 150. On the other hand, the Samsung SSD 850 Evo was only 10% faster than the WD Blue SSD. Samsung has three different drives with the M.2 connector – a Legacy SATA with AHCI, a PCie with AHCI and an NVMe drive.
By employing both of these technologies, Samsung’s 3D V-NAND is able to provide better scaling than planar NAND flash, at least according to Samsung’s data. This latest V-NAND, in conjunction with the new controller and firmware tweaks also allowed Samsung to increase the endurance ratings on these drives, versus the previous-gen 850 EVO. There are only a couple of gtx 1080 8gb pieces of flash memory on board, along with some DDR4 DRAM cache and a controller. The Samsung MJX controller used here is new and reportedly improves host communication performance and improves compatibility with Linux, though it is the same controller found on the Pro model. The LPDDR4 cache will vary in size depending on the capacity, but will max out at 4GB.
Steady-state testing simulates a drive’s performance similar to that of a drive that been subjected to consumer workloads for extensive amounts of time. The third run is a Vantage HDD test with the test drive attached as an empty, lightly used secondary device. Anvil’s Storage Utilities is a storage benchmark designed to measure the storage performance of SSDs. The Standard Storage Benchmark performs a series of tests; you can run a full test or just the read or write test, or you can run a single test, i.e. 4K QD16.
Photoshop used to take approx 2 mins to open, now approx 20 secs. Illustrator used to take approx 2.5 mins, now opens in approx 25 secs. I had to pull very hard and it did unseat the locking clamp that holds the ribbon cable to the board, but it was easy to push down the clamp and plug in the SSD. You will need to order a data transfer cable ($4 e-Bay) to be able to run Samsung’s data transfer app. I went from a 500gb HDD that was at 95% capacity to a 1tb SSD. it won’t let me post details but please see the attached photo.
Sequential reading was second only to the Toshiba Q300 in the SATA competitors, although it was marginally behind a few drives, including the drive it replaces in the write test. Our typical weapons of choice for benchmarking SSDs are CrystalDiskMark and AS SSD benchmark, both of which provide accurate, reliable synthetic benchmark data. If you run a battery powered system that reduced consumption will keep you going longer without a recharge, especially if you’re swapping out a conventional hard drive for the 860 Evo. The new 860 Evo starts at 250GB and 512MB of LPDDR4 cache, goes up to 1GB at 1TB, 2GB at 2TB and a whopping 4GB on the 4TB option. Yet, and this is the clever part, the power consumption has gone down. Samsuns currently makes 960, 850 and 750 Evo models, although the 960 is exclusively an NVMe PCIE M.2 design and not available in the 2.5in SATA form factor.
