Samsung 860 Evo Review

The Samsung 860 EVO SSD comes in a black-colored box this time, which is the exact opposite of what we’ve seen on its previous 850 EVO that comes in a white-color package. From the design of the box, we can definitely see that Samsung is basically telling you how good their product is with a rather ballsy claim of ‘The SSD that makes the difference’. With the 850 EVO highly regarded as one of the best 2.5-inch SATA SSD you can get during its time, it’s only natural that many would expect to see some improvement and better performance on the 860 EVO. “The 860 EVO has half the endurance of the new 860 Pro, but it’s still quite a bit more than competing products. It’s a good argument, but who really cares?” Well, I do. For that reason I only buy the Pro ones and I’d buy the EVOs above all the others if the Pro weren’t available.

Samsung also gives 860 owners access to a data migration tool you can use to clone the data from an existing drive to your new storage media. The 860 EVO comes in 12 SKUs that cover three form factors and up to five capacities. We’ll focus on the 2.5″ models in this review, but we won’t close the door on a future review of the M.2 or mSATA models. We purchased our 860 EVO drives at Newegg, so they are the same as the models you can buy today. The 860 series supports hardware encryption with TCG Opal and Microsoft’s eDrive.

The rest of the VDBench saw poor results often with spiking latency and unimpressive peak performance. Samsung’s 860 EVO and Pro SSD product line is powered by the company’s latest iteration NAND controller, now at revision MJX. A controller with a low power design, this drive will be amongst the fastest SATA3 models ever tested, no matter what the workload is. It’s not just about performance though, it is about endurance as well.

M.2 SSDs are the standard nowadays, but with a limited number of slots in the best gaming motherboards, 2.5-inch SSDs are a good, speedy alternative. It won’t work miracles and turn it into the best gaming laptop, and you will need to check your model’s compatibility first, but it’s a worthwhile upgrade.

Steady-state testing simulates a drive’s performance similar to that of a drive that been subjected to consumer workloads for extensive amounts of time. The third run is a Vantage HDD test with the test drive attached as an empty, lightly used secondary device. gtx 1090 Anvil’s Storage Utilities is a storage benchmark designed to measure the storage performance of SSDs. The Standard Storage Benchmark performs a series of tests; you can run a full test or just the read or write test, or you can run a single test, i.e. 4K QD16.

Those that have that sort of write level should probably go for the larger models where even their excessive use seems well within the longevity of their new design. The 860 Evo addresses that issue by offering 150TB TBW on the smallest 250GB drives, and then doubling that number at each subsequent size. At 1TB the TBW is an impressive 600TB, and the 4TB mechanism has an incredible 2,400TB or 2.4 Petabytes TBW. This test doesn’t actually provide comparison numbers, it’s more about spikes on the graph and how these represent compression bottlenecks. The 860 Evo is devoid of these, and presented a very consistent performance across the spectrum of this benchmark.

That helps compensate for TLC’s lower native write performance. Samsung EVO SSD’s are reliable, fast and will give new life to an old computer with a spinning drive. The cloning software is easy to use and never fails to completely copy an old drive of any type to a new Samsung SSD. If you are considering trying to save a few bucks by purchasing a QVO instead of an EVO, DON’T DO IT!

As The Vergereports, the company is debuting a new launch, the 870 Evo. It has the newest SATA SSD which is optimized for user navigation that brings Samsung’s fastest speed so far at a lower price. Seeking Tech covers the latest and greatest in technology, which includes TVs, monitors, gaming hardware, printers, projectors, routers, speakers and more.

The new model is 10 MB per second faster (or 1.92% faster) than the 860 EVO. When compared to the Samsung 870 EVO SATA 2.5″ Solid State Drive, the new Samsung 870 EVO SATA 2.5″ SSD has a slightly faster maximum sequential reading speed and maximum sequential writing speed. In comparison between 3-bit and 2-bit, Samsung 3-bit V-NAND shows endurance similar to that of 2-bit planar NAND, and even better performance in heavy workloads.

Photoshop used to take approx 2 mins to open, now approx 20 secs. Illustrator used to take approx 2.5 mins, now opens in approx 25 secs. I had to pull very hard and it did unseat the locking clamp that holds the ribbon cable to the board, but it was easy to push down gtx 1090 the clamp and plug in the SSD. You will need to order a data transfer cable ($4 e-Bay) to be able to run Samsung’s data transfer app. I went from a 500gb HDD that was at 95% capacity to a 1tb SSD. it won’t let me post details but please see the attached photo.
