Samsung 860 Evo

The 2.5-inch version of the Samsung 860 Evo also achieved significantly higher random random read and write speeds that are MB/s faster. Like most, you’re looking for faster speeds from your hard drives. That makes the 860 EVO SSD ideal for high-bandwidth tracking sessions and high-resolution, sample-based virtual instrument rigs. With the 860 EVO 1TB Solid State Drive, you can safely store and render large-sized 4k videos and 3D data used by the latest applications with up to 8x higher TBW than the previous 850 EVO.

Today we’re looking at the new 860 EVO to see how Samsung improved on the world’s best-selling SSD. We’ll compare it to the new lineup of scrappy competitors that spurred the company to finally bring a new series to market and see how it ranks among our list of best ssds. The Samsung Magician software failed to recognize the Samsung SSD! I had to use another file transfer program to clone the drive.

Compared to the 850 EVO, the 860 EVO can allocate up to 6X the capacity for TurboWrite during the most demanding write-intensive workloads. When turned on, RAPID mode increases the SSD’s performance by using part of the host computer’s system memory as its cache. In my testing, this feature worked, but interestingly the lower hardware specs a computer had, the more noticeable an improvement it delivered. Take the 250 GB version, for example, Samsung guarantees that if you write some 80 GB (that’s about ten times my average) every day, the drive will last for longer than five years. Larger capacities of the 860 Evo will have even more endurance accordingly. Despite being equipped with less flash memory, the Evo scored almost as well as the Pro in my tests.

But, now with the 860 EVO, class-leading endurance is backed up with a factory warranty that covers the 860 EVO for up to 6x the endurance of the 850 EVO. This is one hell of an accomplishment over the bandwidth limited SATA interface. Like we stated in our 860 Pro review, we didn’t think we would see another SATA-based EVO coming from Samsung, but we are glad to be wrong in this case.

That makes the new 860 Evo series design it sent us the flagship SATA SSD, as it offers more capacity and greater lifespan than even the current 850 Pro series devices. At close to three times the speed of spinning rust the SATA SSD also uses less power, is lighter, silent, and connects using a port that all desktop systems come with as standard. Focus only on the product you are posting your review under. We hope our support team resolved any issues with your product.

In our Samsung NVMe driver test using 0Fill data, the drive gets 1,670MB/s sequential read speeds, 1,537MB/s sequential write speeds, 560MB/s random 4K read speeds and 346MB/s random 4K write speeds. The Samsung 860 Pro is still the king of the SATA drives with a faster sequential read and write speed, on top of MB/s faster random read and write speeds. These will ultimately lead to faster load times, booting sequences and general file transfers, though the difference will be virtually impossible to distinguish. In fact, our testing showed small but noticeable improvements in the gtx 1090’s performance over its predecessor. Namely, there are 5-20 MB/s improvements in both sequential read and write speeds.

The 960 evo isn’t much more either really, at the 250gb level anyway. Samsung claims its fourth-generation 64-layer V-NAND is 30% more energy efficient than its 48-layer predecessor. Samsung accomplished the feat by reducing the input voltage from 3.3 volts to just 2.5 volts. It also reduced the program time to 500 microseconds, which is 1.5X faster than the previous generation.

Don’t worry though, it’ll be a wide spread of products ranging from 250 GB, 500 GB, 1 TB, 2 TB and thus 4 TB. This drive has been a wonderful upgrade for some of our older service tech laptops. I am using software to clone the drive, so no data is lost and it takes me about an hour per machine. Plus with the price I am able to not need to buy new hardware. Designed for everyday computing, the Samsung 860 EVO is powered by the V-NAND technology and a robust algorithm-based Samsung controller to handle the workloads of mainstream PCs and laptops.

Samsung SSDs are still the only SATA SSDs to crack 300 MB/s storage bandwidth. They are really in a class of their own when running moderate workloads. This time the 860 EVO gets the better of the 850 gigabyte gtx 1060 3gb EVO when running moderate workloads, and this is despite a significant capacity disadvantage. With a partition on the drive and 75% full, we are not quite able to hit factory max random read specs.

The rear of the packaging advertises the drive’s 5-year limited warranty. Samsung’s 860 EVO Series comes with Samsung Data Migration and Samsung Magician software via download. Samsung Data Migration software allows you to easily migrate your OS and all data contained on your old system disk to your new 860 EVO with a couple of clicks. The Samsung Magician software is a helpful tool. Both drives share the same Samsung Magician software that you can use to perform many tasks such as firmware updates or performance tests. You can also use it to manage the SSD’s performance by adjusting the Over-provisioning and RAPID mode features. In my real-world anecdotal tests, I couldn’t see the difference between the two drives at all.
