Though I would like to point out that the 3bit MLC 3D V-NAND naming for its TLC NAND flash that is somewhat misleading, as some might think that it’s actually using MLC NAND flash because of the naming. Developed by a Japanese coder that goes by the nickname Hiyohiyo, CrystalDiskMark is one of the most frequently used SSD Benchmark utility to measure SSD’s read and write performance. Samsung’s 860 SSD has been one of the standards for PC parts since it was released in 2018. Now, the company is announcing its successor, the 870 Evo, its latest SATA SSD designed for consumer use that brings faster speeds and lower prices.
By employing both of these technologies, Samsung’s 3D V-NAND is able to provide better scaling than planar NAND flash, at least according to Samsung’s data. This latest V-NAND, in conjunction with the new controller and firmware tweaks also allowed Samsung to increase the endurance ratings on these drives, versus the previous-gen 850 EVO. There are only a couple of gigabyte gtx 1060 3gb pieces of flash memory on board, along with some DDR4 DRAM cache and a controller. The Samsung MJX controller used here is new and reportedly improves host communication performance and improves compatibility with Linux, though it is the same controller found on the Pro model. The LPDDR4 cache will vary in size depending on the capacity, but will max out at 4GB.
