Polo is one of the easiest scents in the world to overspray. I think we’ve all been in the room with a guy who wore too much of this on too warm of a day. Also, the presence of personal body funk (or the dreaded ‘older man smell’) can render this fragrance just a really ugly air pollutant. I’m sure encounters like this have turned more than a few people against Polo. I think men who have a strong natural smell to their person are better off with a fresher fragrance to wear. This is my absolute favorite winter fragrance.
A sharp, bitter synthetic “green” fragrance that’s more dated than Burt Reynolds’ mustache. This is the most ubiquitous fragrances on older men in America, especially the South. Much like my elders, I respect it, but I’d rather spend my time and money on any other piece of my collection. This is one of the few fragrances that I can smell in public and undoubtedly know exactly what the man is wearing.
I don’t know of any fragrance that actually smell close to it though. Nothing to add but this is the epitome of masculine men’s fragrance. I never wore this on a regular basis in the past but I believe the recently purchased bottle I have, though true to what I remember, has the overall heft and base notes dialed back. It still lasts well and seems more versatile now to me. Redolent of pine trees and stale cigarette butts.
I would take this bottle with me to my grave and bury me with it. 6 out of 5 scent when you remind yourself that this was when things were really good and perfume houses were in their ascendancy. Fragrantica is a complete joke at this point. An Intense flanker of this fragrance has been on sale for at least 2 weeks at this point and was announced more than a month ago, and it STILL does not have a page on Fragrantica. This is a massive fragrance release, but Fragrantica is too busy talking about the “fragrance brands” that are founded from hipsters’ garages in Seattle and Portland every week. Fresh, earthy, spicy scent wrapped in dried tobacco leaves created for the MAN of the 70’s and 80’s, I used to wear more in cooler summer days.
In 1977 Ralph Lauren Corporation introduced a signature cotton mesh polo shirt in various colours, featuring the polo player logo on the chest. It’s a masterpiece, I love this scent. First time I wore this fragrance about 30 years ago. It opens with green strong notes after 3 hours, it changes like leather and dry tobacco. Polo green is one of the best fragrance in my collection. Still smells great but unfortunately for me my stepfather still wears this and I have a hard time wearing this and feeling like it’s my own.
I still have several of those bags in the classic green canvas to this day. I used the canvas briefcase for my first job out of college Polo Ralph Lauren t shirt in 1984. The satchel bag I have still has the paper surrounding the shoulder strap tucked under the flap, and it looks brand new.
I’m reminded of how my clothes smelled when I was a smoker. It’s also a very nostalgic smell and, yes, I would also dub it a “dad smell”, if there was such a thing. Kind of interesting accord, but definitely not universally ralph lauren t shirt appealing. Women love this one and it is the epitome of masculinity. Several women I’ve been with or past girlfriends express that they love the smell and tend to borrow/keep my clothes that have the scent lingering.

A couple of wide striped classic fit cotton tees will always be a great choice. Never mind the country club image here folks, Polo, because this isn’t gentlemanly games on the Chelsea commons of West London circa 1910. This fragrance is brutal, earthy, dark and danky pine woods like the ones that used to cover all of Northern Europe before the 12th century.

One year passed and the result was “Polo for Men,” also known as “Polo Green.” But the drydown is immaculate and slightly tobacco without it being smoky. This is such an intoxicating scent that it becomes you. Once you grow up with this, your standards are so much higher in what you expect a good edt to be. This is something millenials just don’t understand. Look if God had his own perfume house, then this would be the garden of Eden scent.
