Overclocking the R gets it to 979 points, an improvement of just 2.3%. The 9600K with an overclock leaps by 13%, from 942 points to 1065 points. AMD’s R5 can hold its own here, but frequency dependence in Photoshop does shift the recommendation to be less strongly towards the 3600. The CPUs at 240 FPS average and above are almost entirely GPU limited, but all of our 3600 results fall just short of that range.
Given the $249 MSRP for the Ryzen XT, the Core i K no longer sits in the midrange as the no-doubter option for 1080p gamers who might also run entry-level content creation tasks on the same machine. The 12-thread Hyper-Threading feature, brought back by Intel, came just in the nick of time to keep the Core i K from being written off altogether as any gigabyte gtx 1060 3gb kind of value for creative types. (After all, the Ryzen G does exist, if you want to go that route, and its IGP is excellent.) But hopefully by the time Zen 3 comes along, we’ll have a muscular processor in the $250 range from AMD that also comes with the option of a Vega IGP.
