Polo is one of the easiest scents in the world to overspray. I think we’ve all been in the room with a guy who wore too much of this on too warm of a day. Also, the presence of personal body funk (or the dreaded ‘older man smell’) can render this fragrance just a really ugly air pollutant. I’m sure encounters like this have turned more than a few people against Polo. I think men who have a strong natural smell to their person are better off with a fresher fragrance to wear. This is my absolute favorite winter fragrance.
I wouldn’t recommend for every day use. Starting more than 40 years ago with a tie collection, Ralph Lauren never envisioned boundaries. They set the perfect start of a casual look. You’ll need a few Oxford shirts as well. Solids are good, but be sure to pick up a few stripes as well. A couple of wide striped classic fit cotton tees will always be a great choice. Never mind the country club image here folks, Polo, because this isn’t gentlemanly games on the Chelsea commons of West London circa 1910. This fragrance is brutal, earthy, dark and danky pine woods like the ones that used to cover all of Northern Europe before the 12th century.
One year passed and the result was “Polo for Men,” also known as “Polo Green.” But the drydown is immaculate and slightly tobacco without it being smoky. This is such an intoxicating scent that it becomes you. Once you grow up with this, your standards are so much higher in what you expect a good edt to be. This is something millenials just don’t understand. Look if God had his own perfume house, then this would be the garden of Eden scent.
Not saying similar but it takes you on a journey. I’ll admit I don’t like the first phase of this that much and putting your nose right up to where it’s sprayed isn’t pleasant, it’s the cloud it surrounds you in that makes people take notice. I’ve heard polo dress shirts that the new formulation is much better, w/ more leather and pine, better note-separation and improved longevity. It’s not a timeless scent, it is a very specific to its time scent, and that time is gone . This said, I would never ever wear this.
If anything this cologne gets the most positive reaction from younger women out of all my colognes. Not exactly “sexy” positive, but “unique” positive, in a good way. All you need is the ’78 Firebird and to unbutton your shirt polo dress shirts revealing a hairy chest to complete the picture. I will most likely give an update in the future, maybe on 6 months when I’ve got a more solid opinion, but I have a feeling I’m only going to like this fragrance more.
Perhaps this sort of thing made a lasting impression on me as a kid – Brut and soap-on-a-rope for Xmas, I don’t know. But I’m learning that the woodsy/green/leathers with earthy patch/vetiver/oakmoss drydowns are usually winners for me. The tobacco note in Polo, as elsewhere, only serves to make me love this more. Got a 237ml bottle of this as Xmas present to myself – ‘cos I is werf it. The big talk about this one is reformulation.
Light pine, light tobacco, light oakmoss, light leather, Chypre style. Either the bottle now is diluted or my memory has diluted. Either way, I do enjoy it now but wish it can be the strong green beast-like in my memory. Polo jeans clothing often features a logo of a polo player on a horse.
