G Shock Rangeman Review
It came with a titanium screw-back case – an unusually high-cost design. The Frogman proved to be very popular and at some point between then and 1995 Casio decided to produce more variations, including limited edition colours that in some cases have become very valuable. The watch is designed to withstand harsh conditions with dust- and dirt-proof, mud-resistant construction, low-temperature resistance down to -20°C (-4°F), a carbon fiber insert band, and sapphire crystal. The Rangeman is one of Casio’s best professional-grade digital G-Shock models. It boasts Triple Sensors, which include an altitude measurer and pressure barometer, on top of the direction and thermo sensors.
Having a barometer on your wrist means that you’re much less likely to get caught in the rain when you’re out hiking or whatever it is you people do outside. Before the days of weathermen and weather apps, we had to figure out ourselves if it was going to rain. One thing we realized is that when the air pressure dropped, a storm was likely on its way. Further, I prefer the resin strap keeper, not so happy with the steel versions. The GW-9400 Rangeman is the quintessential modern Casio G-Shock watch and has arguably replaced the Frogman as the most desirable all-digital G-Shock.
I’ll be wearing mine to the beach a lot this summer, where hopefully the clear straps will combat my annual watch-tan. It can pretty much go anywhere, as I wanted and expected when I bought it, and that can include going out to eat, a round of golf, hanging out by a pool, and maybe even checking out an outdoor concert. I just bought Dead & Company tix, so you can probably guess which other G-Shock is poised for that show. But pretty much anything I might want to get up to this summer, my CasiOak has me covered. Taking the CasiOak out for a run, I set the stopwatch to hit the road one sunny afternoon. This is the first digital G-Shock I’ve owned that’s featured a white-on-black digital display. It really pops in bright light and the digits have almost a reflective quality. I had worried that as I was huffing and puffing on the backstretch of my 5K, the small digital stopwatch display would prove inadequate and I wouldn’t be able to read it at a glance.
There have been several limited editions of the Masters series, and depending on their scarcity these command some of the highest prices for any of Casio watches. The Men in Black and Men in Yellow series are black and yellow versions of the Masters baby g shock and typically command anywhere between two and three times the resale value of the regular versions.
