GPS navigation is usable for approximately 33 hours on a wireless charge of about five hours. If the battery becomes depleted, GPS functions can be resumed by charging the watch in bright light. (GPS functions are usable for one hour on a solar charge of approximately four hours in 50,000 lux conditions.) Regardless of the status of GPS functions, solar charging keeps the time display powered at all times. Watches with the triple sensor feature include an atmospheric pressure barometer and an altimeter, in addition to the compass and thermometer sensor.
The on-board GPS can be used to plot routes and track your progress live on-screen. You’ll notice that there’s a sizeable bezel running around the display on the G-Shock Rangeman, but as you may have already guessed there’s a good reason that. Or at least, that route would immediately get displayed; one can’t really speak of navigation along a route. Once you have created and transferred a route and then start navigation, the Casio Rangeman starts the navigation along that route. On the other hand, tracks cannot be exported from the app; they are locked in there. This is also why I cannot show any comparison tracks from the Rangeman of the kind I produce for all the other GPS watches.
It’s a cool aesthetic, but it’s also three times more expensive than the standard version. The Rangeman has a bright white LED backlight, while the Mudman features a green electroluminescent backlight. The current G-Shock Mudman was released in 2011 as a descendant to the original model, which was especially designed to withstand mud and dirt. Thanks to the sizable bezel of the solar panel though, the screen is also quite small with menu text being rather small. If your eyesight isn’t great you may well have trouble reading what’s on screen.
Some say the Rangeman looks more rugged because the buttons stick out of the sides. This gives it a more jagged silhouette compared to the Madman’s rounder, softer outline. The app provides more detailed information and data about your terrain, routes and movements which the watch screen can’t display. Not only is it water and dust resistant, it’s also mud resistant. Gaskets have been fitted to the buttons to ensure the brown stuff doesn’t sneak inside when the weather turns grim.
