With more RAM — 11GB versus 8GB — and the ability to handle more operations per second, the Ti card should also perform better than the base RTX 2080 when it comes to ray tracing. Nvidia claims that the RTX 2080 is capable of 60 trillion RTX OPS and 8 GigRays per second, while the more capable Ti edition can handle 78 trillion RTX OPS and 10 GigaRays per second. Nvidia’s new 20-series GPUs, based on the Turing architecture, are damn fast. But I don’t know if I can actually recommend the 2080 or the 2080 Ti right now. Sure no machine, not even a dedicated 4K console like the PS4 Pro or Xbox One X, can match the 2080 and 2080 Ti for performance.
The Ti version comes with six graphics processing clusters, each with its own raster engine and six texture processing clusters. Each texture processing cluster comes with two streaming multiprocessor , with gtx 1080 8gb each SM containing a single RT processing core, 64 CUDA Cores, eight Tensor Cores, and four texture units. Essentially, as you go down the line in the RTX series, you’ll find fewer RT and Tensor Cores.
After all, lighting and shadows have always been the area of visuals that provide the biggest improvement, with poor quality images pulling us out of the immersive moment. If the new Turing architecture can really bring photo quality gaming to our desktops, then we want to be first in the queue to experience them. Based on our testing, Nvidia’s big promise of 4K gaming at 60 fps with the RTX 2080 is one that simply doesn’t hold up right now. If you’re willing to compromise on detail settings, then it can work, and some older titles will be able to manage to hit this milestone. But if you’re buying the 2080, you should plan to stick to 1440p or lower resolutions.
Nvidia’s last generation, the 10-series, came out about two years ago and is still available today, and it’s still plenty fast for most games. I say games and not things because unless you’re mining crypto you’re probably only in the market for an expensive graphics card so you can play games on your expensive computer. You don’t really need a pricey GPU for working in Photoshop or editing a film.
However, if you intend on sticking to HD gaming then buying a RTX 2080 Ti is overkill. The difference between the RTX 2080 Ti and GTX 1080 Ti’s performance when the resolution is set to 1920 x 1080 is barely noticeable. The older, cheaper, still on sale, GTX 1060 and GTX 1050 Ti also play most games at this resolution. Yup, there wasn’t really a noticeable difference between the graphic cards’ benchmarks.
However, more powerful mainstream gaming laptops are often priced between $1,500-$2,000. Premium systems typically cost more than $2,000 and come stacked with a host of high-powered goodies such as high-powered specs and tricked-out software. The simple fact is that GeForce gtx 1090 enables a new level of gaming performance. From the performance side of things, it’s awesome to see a single graphics card that can consistently break 60fps at 4K. Nvidia has graphics hardware sporting tons of bespoke features, and at least 25 games are slated to use one or more of the new rendering modes.
Unlike existing graphics cards, these include dedicated RT cores to vastly improve real-time ray tracing performance, putting the Holy Grail of gaming graphics within reach. Also unlike existing graphics cards, the GeForce RTX 2080 and 2080 Ti include dedicated tensor cores to leverage the awesome power of machine learning and a Saturn V supercomputer in the games you play. Ray tracing is the headline-grabbing feature, and it sounds great, but the practical benefits remain unknown outside of snazzy demos. Plenty of games will likely support it in the future, but the real test will be whether the next generation of consoles will offer support. Game developers are increasingly creating titles that are designed to scale across a variety of hardware. If there is any company that can push ray tracing, it’s Nvidia, but it will still be a challenge.
