13 In Three Knife, Two Speed Thickness Planer
Powerful 15 Amp motor drives the cutterhead at 10,000 RPM handling deep cuts, up to 1/8″, with ease in wide material. This is because disposable blades are always the same height. When sharpening blades, material is removed and the blade becomes shorter and may even become slightly skewed. That is why you always need to recalibrate their position in the planer. DeWalt uses reversible blades which are disposable after use so sharpening is not really an option on these packages.
So, basically, if you have a means of supporting the lumber you plan to mill with the planer, then definitely go for the DW735. It’s worth nothing that you have to have the unit on when you’re changing speed in order for it to effectively change gears. A planer doesn’t need much juice to shave a layer off the top of these materials. BobVila.com and its partners may earn a commission if you purchase a product through one of our links.
I did consider the cost of blades since most of them are disposable these days. Of course it’s hard to know how long they are going to last other than online reviews, but then you don’t know if the reviewer really knows what he’s doing or talking dewalt Hand tools about. Personally I can’t see buying a helical head for a portable planer. If you’re going to invest that much money it’s not much more to get a “real” 15″ planer. I ended up with a Delta and the blades were only about $40.00 a set at the time.
I borrowed one from a friend and decided it was time to purchase my own. The unit is heavy and the mobile base makes it easy to move around. I would strongly suggest purchasing the mobile base with this machine. Great machine, no snipe, smooth finish with little to no sanding.

Planers can draw a lot of power, and a 15-amp motor helps ensure that they can handle the task at hand without breaking down. Thanks for the review Jay, I was going to write you and ask why you selected this machine but now I know. I’ve been torn between this and the smaller brother 734, think I’ll save some cash and go with the 734. I’m one of those who pestered you about this writeup because I own a DW735. THANK YOU for showing your setup and giving me some guidance on how to tame snipe. It is TERRIBLE on my unit without any extra infeed/outfeed support.
No heave lifting, no long tables, just takes 2 or 3 people to move the supports around while the planer travels down the length of the plank. Basically, when you’re buying a DeWalt tool, you’re getting the very best Black & Decker products. This has aluminum shoes in the front and back, with the front shoe featuring a precision-machined groove. A kickstand also lets you rest the planer on the work surface. You also get a carrying case so you can easily bring it with you, while storage isn’t a problem.
