Snipe is fairly common with thickness planers, especially benchtop models like the ones in this evaluation. We compared the length of snipe for each planer and material type. For this evaluation we measured the amp draw for each thickness planer under load planing several different types of wood. Again in our opinion this helps compare the strength of the motors during the planing process. Owners of the DW735 wood planer has a 4-star consumer review rating on the DeWalt website. Users cited high marks for its ease of use, effectiveness, value, quality, and durability.
Thankfully I stocked up as they’ve gone up a good bit since. However, I had to send the first planer back due to a quality control issue at the factory. The belt pullys were misaligned and ate the belt in about 10 minutes. The second one has been good, but I’m done with Delta as their quality has definitely gone down hill lately.

This is where the depth setting dial comes in really handy. The depth setting dial has several incremental depth stops at standard measurements from 1/8th of an inch to 1-1/4 inches. This feature was a major help when we needed to plane several reclaimed oak boards for a desktop down to 1-1/4 thick. If I ever get the shop cleaned out and make enough room I’m going to get a Grizzly 15″ and put a Byrd cutterhead on it. That will be about $1,800.00, but it should be the last planer I ever need and years before I have to spend money on replacement carbide inserts. I have a jointer with a helical head and one of the greatest things is it’s very quiet.
Instead of one long straight blade, spiral cutterheads have multiple smaller knives, offset from each other in a spiral around the cutterhead. Spiral knife planers yield more consistent results than straight knife planers do. As well, the blades are reversible when they dull, and dewalt tools if you run into a stray nail or screw with your planer, it will only damage one blade as opposed to the entire knife. Its blades are also 13 inches wide meaning you cant interchange them with the 12.5-inch blades of the 734 although these particular blades give you 5 more inches of room to work with. This planer uses 13inch blades which give you room for larger planks of lumber. Its multiple speeds also help smoothen rougher pieces of lumber.
I already retired the Planar Digital and went back to my Wixey Digital. I am sure that iGaging will learn and fix these issues. Dial-in the perfect planer depth setting every time to provide the most efficient planer performance. The setup for the DeWalt Planer Stand is as easy as it gets with the predrilled holes and heavy-gauge steel brackets that support the planer. The most innovative feature of this set-up is the wheel set, which can be engaged by using a foot pedal for instant portability or disengaged to secure the unit in place. I have sharpened many planer blades, I do not know if any of them are to Dewalt 735, but at least very similar.
So it was our responsibility to get all the lumber down to the same thickness and that’s where the Dewalt planer came into play. The extension tables are sufficiently long for a planer of this size. The few settings the planer does have are easily fiddled with. The dust collection hood that comes with the planer works well and has adapters for other hose sizes. If not it will spew gobs of shavings out the front and back and be very messy.
