Dewalt Dw735 13″ Two Speed Planer Review

Planers can be some of the heaviest tools in your shop. Benchtop planers weigh between 60 and 100 pounds on average, so it may be wise to keep it on your benchtop rather than moving it around. Cutterhead speed refers to how quickly the motor spins the cutterhead. Many planers use pulleys and belts from the motor to spin the cutterhead.

I don’t remember seeing this amount of detailing with the ejection system on any of the best planers. Over the last few months I’ve planed all kinds of wood from soft pine to hard maple, purple heart and even walnut. Each time I’ve planed the material the finish is so smooth it hardly even needs to be sanded. The ease in setting up and planing pieces of wood is incredibly impressive.

, the Digital Readout is designed to last for many years with no concerns of fatigue or need to recalibrate. The Digital Readout Unit itself is a very precise and durable unit made with quality parts. It uses standard 2032 watch-type batteries that will offer hundreds of hours of uninterrupted use. The DRO is also set to turn off after 5 minutes without use, but will return to the previous reading with a touch of a button. Quickly match board thickness to an existing dado or groove without repetitive test fits.

A four column carriage lock keeps the cutterhead in place when planing with it and prevent any movement that may cause snipe. Dust collection is easy with the DW734, as it comes equipped dewalt tools with dust hood which you can easily attach to a shop vac for effective dust collection. One of the most important feature of the DW735 planer is the 2 speed gear box it’s equipped with.

In fact the last time we did a planer review was back in May 2011 when we did the Delta Planer. This time we are going to tackle the Dewalt 13″ two speed planer. We hope you enjoy this review as the next planer review will be in another two years. For woods that are harder or more prone to tear out a slower speed might be useful. Personally I think preventing tear out has more to do with the sharpness of the knives and how deep each pass through the planer is. It can bog down if you’re trying to take too much good off a large board, especially with very hard wood.

Just above the feed opening is a gauge that shows how much wood is being removed. After starting with more than 200 power tools and hundreds more accessories, they also offered hand tools for contractors by 2011. The DW735 is more obviously geared towards the more serious wood workers. This is why they don’t include the infeed and outfeed tables in the package.

The $499.88 price is a hair over Black Friday 2019 pricing of $499.00, which was the lowest price I have ever seen on this planer combo. A good price on this planer is usually $525 to $575, and that’s typically after a $25 off $100+ promo or similar. $500 is a great price, and I don’t think I’ve ever seen it priced lower than $499.00.

Automatic carriage lock reduces the movement that causes snipe without the need for manual engagement by the user. Last week I was running some walnut thru my 735 and it came upon some wonky grain and bogged down and shut off. I let it cool down and pushed the reset circuit breaker ( and that’s what it is called). I found out that the 18 amp breaker becomes weaker and weaker, each time it trips.

This finishing speed is nearly twice as slow, and gives much nicer planing results. It also helps with dealing with difficult, reversing grains and figured woods. If you are able to resharpen them yourselves , you can save on costs of purchasing replacement blades. You can also pick your preferred angle for the blades, and even add a micro bevel, which may improve the cut quality.

It has an aluminum cast base, sturdy and strong for durability and also aligned for accuracy. It also uses disposable blades that eliminate the need for sharpening. With the DW734, you can only plane at a single speed of 96 CPI. It’s a really smooth finish as well, and I’m sure any woodworker can do well with it.
