With long heavy planking we have supported the plank in various places and let the planer run itself down the plank.
The power difference was clear during the planing operations as it didn’t seem to care what we ran through it. But it’s important to note if you’re going to buy the DEWALT DW735X you MUST have a dedicated 20A circuit as it’s not going to run dewalt Hand tools well on a 15A circuit. We’re not going to rank this category as we feel a bench-top shop tool like this will always require some setup and fine tuning. Of the 8 planers Makita definitely has the best system for making those adjustments.
As unlikely as it sounds, a thin film of wax on the support bed is essential for wood to pass smoothly through every planer I’ve used. This applies to the dozens of machines I’ve tested over the years, as well as the three different planers I’ve used personally in my own workshop. Eventually, the wood stops feeding through properly without wax. Most woodworkers that I viewed online recommend upgrading the blades. There are many different replacement blade brands available, though I haven’t tried any so I can’t recommend one from personal experience.
Planers can draw a lot of power, and a 15-amp motor helps ensure that they can handle the task at hand without breaking down. Thanks for the review Jay, I was going to write you and ask why you selected this machine but now I know. I’ve been torn between this and the smaller brother 734, think I’ll save some cash and go with the 734. I’m one of those who pestered you about this writeup because I own a DW735. THANK YOU for showing your setup and giving me some guidance on how to tame snipe. It is TERRIBLE on my unit without any extra infeed/outfeed support.
Noise level not a meaningful factor to spend hundreds extra. At this low price, and given the uncertainty of how long it’ll remain stable, it might be best to decide quickly whether to order one immediately, or wait for the next promo. The price might skyrocket if the planer sells out, or Amazon might honor the price on a certain number of backorders. Or it might remain at this price and in-stock inventory levels for a week or longer. My gut feeling says that the deal won’t last long, but that’s also not a high-confidence guess.
