The one thing I was most concerned about with this small planner was dust and chip collection. I’ve got a pretty robust dust collection system in my shop, however the amount of dust and chips that a planer produce gave me reason for concern. The DW735 has a built-in chip blower mounted at the rear of the unit. It helps push chips out from the unit and into the dust collection pipe. This combined with the dust collector creates a system that works exceptionally well.
With the benchtop planer turned off, lower the cutterhead onto the board to get a starting point. Remove the board, turn on the machine, and run the board through the planer. Continue to lower the cutterhead for each pass until you’ve shaved the board down to the desired height. This planer has a 15-amp motor that produces 8,500 RPMs. It has a two-knife cutterhead and a depth of cut of up to 1/8-inch.
I don’t remember seeing this amount of detailing with the ejection system on any of the best planers. Over the last few months I’ve planed all kinds of wood from soft pine to hard maple, purple heart and even walnut. Each time I’ve planed the material the finish is so smooth it hardly even needs to be sanded. The ease in setting up and planing pieces of wood is incredibly impressive.
Very basically, a planer is a cutting tool that makes the top face of a board parallel to the bottom board. You set the cut depth and feed the board into one end. A powered roller grabs the wood and pushes it under the cutter head, which trims anywhere from 1/32” to ⅛” off the top before pushing it out the other side.

The real question will be do you have a separate dedicated circuit, because if you run this on the same circuit as your dust collection I’m certain that will be a problem. I was just wondering what your thoughts are on the Jet 13″ benchtop planer and how it would compare to Dewalts benchtop planer. I just acquired a DW735 and am really pleased so far. I had to unclog the discharge chute and rotate the blades.
I haven’t had to try and have the knives resharpened. The sharpening services I have used don’t get blades as sharp as I would with sandpaper and glass. I’ve run 12 inches of stuff like purpleheart through it and it does bog down and cause some tearout. But like emart said, that’s to be expected in a lunchbox planer. I have the same planer and still have the original box.
