I would definitely recommend this planer to anyone serious about their wood. Portable thickness planers have to squeeze a lot of power into a small footprint that can be reasonably moved around a shop or to a job site. But even within this limitation there are some substantial differences in size and weight of the machines we’ve tested. But every machine is capable of planing boards 12 to 13 inches wide and 6 inches tall. The specifics and the differences are show in the lists below. The big chip on this planer blade was caused by a hidden nail embedded in a board.

The $499.88 price is a hair over Black Friday 2019 pricing of $499.00, which was the lowest price I have ever seen on this planer combo. A good price on this planer is usually $525 to $575, and that’s typically after a $25 off $100+ promo or similar. $500 is a great price, and I don’t think I’ve ever seen it priced lower than $499.00.

Furthermore, because this wood planer is so easy to use, this accuracy is not dependent upon your experience. The one thing I was most concerned about with this small planner was dust and chip collection. I’ve got a pretty robust dust collection system in my shop, however the amount of dust and chips that a planer produce gave me reason for concern. The DW735 has a built-in chip blower mounted at the rear of the unit. It helps push chips out from the unit and into the dust collection pipe. This combined with the dust collector creates a system that works exceptionally well.

Automatic carriage lock reduces the movement that causes snipe without the need for manual engagement by the user. Last week I was running some walnut thru my 735 and it came upon some wonky grain and bogged down and shut off. I let it cool down and pushed the reset circuit breaker ( and that’s what it is called). I found out that the 18 amp breaker becomes weaker and weaker, each time it trips.

The last gripe is that if you have the dust collection hood installed you can’t fold up the rear table. If you can plunk it down in one location you’ll be fine. It’s not going to burst your eardrums but it will assault your senses. If you had to run it for more than 10 minutes at a time you might want to consider ear plugs.

The wood comes out so smooth it requires little to no sanding. I can move the planer easily and it takes up very little space. The first board I have ever done looks better than anything I have purchased at the big box wood suppliers. After running 3 projects worth of lumber through this planer, we’re impressed. The DeWalt DW735 is a perfect upgrade from the lower powered benchtop planer, and very effectively bridges the gap to professional shop machinery. We’re not quite ready to open a mill workshop, but this planer does everything that we’ve asked of it and has performed admirably.

Planers can be some of the heaviest tools in your shop. Benchtop planers weigh between 60 and 100 pounds on average, so it may be wise to keep it on your benchtop rather dewalt accessories than moving it around. Cutterhead speed refers to how quickly the motor spins the cutterhead. Many planers use pulleys and belts from the motor to spin the cutterhead.

The DeWalt DW735 is fairly easy to use and is pretty well self-explanatory for anyone that uses a planer. The real tests for this machine are the power and accuracy. Power is one of our main concerns with a new planer considering the number of times we trip the breaker on our old model either from overloading the motor or thermal shutdown.

She was made of cypress and needed some new planking to get her shipshape, and, luckily, we had a cypress mill nearby to supply the 4/4 rough-sawn stock. But then again you won’t get results as with a DeWalt product. This is the reason why serious wood workers go with dewalt accessoriess. They may spend more money, but they get also profession results that they can be proud of, while the work goes a lot more quickly and more easily. Now with the DW735 you can deal with boards that measure 13 inches wide, instead of just 12.5 inches. This can deal with even tough hardwood, and the controls are much easier to use.
