Without AMD apparently nipping at its high-end PC heels, Nvidia enjoys some bandwidth to try some crazy things. In this case, those come in the form of proprietary standards for anti-aliasing, ray tracing, and rasterization. There are a lot of design changes that went in developing GDDR56 to achieve the faster transfer speeds, higher bandwidth and in a package that consumers just around the same power or even lower.
Now that we’re a couple of months into the RTX laptop era, it’s time to pause and look at how this first wave of laptops with Nvidia’s hyped-up new mobile graphics technology fares in real-world testing. Unless the tasks you are throwing at it require more than 11GB of graphics memory, it comes very close to the performance of the Titan RTX, for less than half the cost. Synthetic benchmarks don’t accurately predict how a GPU will perform in production, but they do provide a way to compare the cards on test with older models, since scores for a wide range of GPUs are available online. Unlike previous reviews, I haven’t included Cinebench here, since the last version to feature a GPU benchmark is now over six years old. The first set of applications either don’t use OptiX for ray tracing, or don’t make it possible to turn the OptiX backend on and off, so it isn’t possible to assess the impact of RTX acceleration on performance. Without any ray tracing or DLSS features, the investigation showed Shadow of the Tomb Raider to prefer the RTX 2080 Ti at 1080p and 1440p, with clear leads for the older card.
This means you can count on super-smooth gameplay at maximum resolutions with ultimate visual fidelity in GeForce RTX 2080 Ti and 2080 graphics cards. It’s a wildly fast graphics card, offering roughly one-third better performance than the outgoing GTX 1080 Founders Edition. Dell engineered this model to be a large display with tons of desktop real estate.
But even then, the RTX 2080 is cutting it close to delivering that sacred, silky-smooth frame rate at Ultra-HD resolutions. If you don’t want to deal with compromises, toning down your settings and splurging even more, you’d be much better off going with the top-end Nvidia RTX 2080 Ti. Spec for spec, the RTX 2080 is a step up from its predecessors in every way, packing more CUDA cores, faster GDDR6 video memory and even the first very 90Mhz factory overclock on Nvidia’s Founders Edition cards.
Note that we were originally hearing a 1-3 month latency on partner cards, but that looks to be only for advanced models that are just now entering production. All three of the new RTX cards will feature built-in support for real-time ray tracing, a rendering and lighting technique for photorealistic graphics that gaming companies are starting to introduce this year. Nvidia announced a real-time gtx 1080 8gb ray tracing technology that it refers to as Nvidia RTX — hence the new naming scheme for the company’s upcoming GPUs — during the 2018 Game Developers Conference in March. Ray tracing is the standard for applications such as visual effects in the film industry, but it is extremely computationally intensive, which has meant that — at least until now — it has been impractical for gaming.

On August 14, 2018, Nvidia teased the announcement of the first card in the 20 series, the GeForce RTX 2080, shortly after introducing the Turing architecture at SIGGRAPH earlier that year.
The 20 series marked the introduction of Nvidia’s Turing microarchitecture, and the first generation of RTX cards, the first in the industry to implement realtime hardware ray tracing in a consumer product. In a departure from Nvidia’s usual strategy, the 20 series doesn’t have an entry level range, leaving it to the 16 series to cover this segment of the market. Outside of our benchmark tests, the Nvidia RTX 2080 also managed to achieve 40 fps while playing Shadow of the Tomb Raider at 4K and the highest settings available. Destiny 2 delivered even better numbers with a frame rate hovering between fps, once again at 4K and Ultra settings, not to mention HDR turned on. DirectX 12 Ultimate is the new standard for next-gen games, taking them to a whole new level of realism and performance with ray tracing, variable rate shading, mesh shaders, and more. With GeForce RTX, you’ll be ready for the most advanced and graphically intensive PC games.
The cards move forward with an upgraded-but-familiar Volta architecture, with some changes to the SMs and memory. The new RTX 2080 and 2080 Ti ship with reference cards first, and partner cards largely at the same time (with some more advanced models coming 1+ month later), depending on which partner it is. The board partners did not receive pricing or even card naming until around the same time as media, so expect delays in custom solutions.
And once again, depending on the game we see between five and eight percent uplift, but on some games, there’s no difference between the two GPUs at all. Like the previous Super cards, it now has a shiny metallic surface, which looks really slick, but this mirrored surface lies face-down when installed in my gaming PC so nobody will see it, which is a shame. The metallic backplate is still here too, and it looks as good as ever and also contributes to this GPU’s premium look and feel. Nvidia recently announced “super” variants of three RTX GPUs to compete with the new Navi GPUs from AMD. We’ve already reviewed the 2060 Super and 2070 Super, but the Super was pushed back a bit, and now it’s finally here.
