Note that we were originally hearing a 1-3 month latency on partner cards, but that looks to be only for advanced models that are just now entering production. All three of the new RTX cards will feature built-in support for real-time ray tracing, a rendering and lighting technique for photorealistic graphics that gaming companies are starting to introduce this year. Nvidia announced a real-time ray tracing technology that it refers to as Nvidia RTX — hence the new naming scheme for the company’s upcoming GPUs — during the 2018 Game Developers Conference in March. Ray tracing is the standard for applications such as visual effects in the film industry, but it is extremely computationally intensive, which has meant that — at least until now — it has been impractical for gaming.
The cards move forward with an upgraded-but-familiar Volta architecture, with some changes to the SMs and memory. The new and 2080 Ti ship with reference cards first, and partner cards largely at the same time (with some more advanced models coming 1+ month later), depending on which partner it is. The board partners did not receive pricing or even card naming until around the same time as media, so expect delays in custom solutions.

According to Samsung, their solution will be operating at up to 18 Gbps against a previous standard speed of 16 Gbps and that is a big deal here.
The 20 series marked the introduction of Nvidia’s Turing microarchitecture, and the first generation of RTX cards, the first in the industry to implement realtime hardware ray tracing in a consumer product. In a departure from Nvidia’s usual strategy, the 20 series doesn’t have an entry level range, leaving it to the 16 series to cover this segment of the market. Outside of our benchmark tests, the Nvidia RTX 2080 also managed to achieve 40 fps while playing Shadow of the Tomb Raider at 4K and the highest settings available. Destiny 2 delivered even better numbers with a frame rate hovering between fps, once again at 4K and Ultra settings, not to mention HDR turned on. But even then, the RTX 2080 is cutting it close to delivering that sacred, silky-smooth frame rate at Ultra-HD resolutions. In Hitman, for example, the RTX 2080 breezed through Agent 47’s Paris catwalk benchmark with an average frame rate of 78fps on Ultra at 4K, and even hitting an average of 93fps on Ultra at 1440p. That’s a couple of frames ahead of the GTX 1080Ti, but highly-optimised games such as Doom and Wolfenstein II showed even greater gains. Here, the RTX 2080 was hitting up to 120fps in both shooters on max settings at 4K, while the GTX 1080Ti often maxed out around the 100fps mark. Neither of these results will be much use if you only have a 60Hz monitor, of course, but those with higher refresh rate screens may appreciate the extra leeway. Across the board, the RTX 2080 proved itself a highly capable card that’s got more than enough chops for 4K gaming on high graphics settings, as well as a very admirable partner for those after max settings at higher refresh rates further down the resolution scale.
But that’s just the tip of the iceberg, the performance metrics don’t stop at the 1080 Ti.
