The only problem is that, for Core i5 PC owners at least, the GTX 1080Ti offers a near identical experience for less money. To help answer those questions, I’ve got the Founders Edition of Nvidia’s RTX 2080 (to see what its beefy big brother’s like, have a read of my Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080Ti review instead). For those of you who like numbers out there, the next two paragraphs are for you. Like all RTX 2080 cards you’ll be able to buy soon, you’ll find 8GB of GDDR6 memory here that can deliver a massive 448GB/s of memory bandwidth, as well as 2944 CUDA cores and a base clock speed of 1515MHz. Where this card differs from the reference spec is its boost clock speed, which has been raised from 1710MHz to 1800MHz. NVIDIA announced its new Turing video cards for gaming today, including the RTX 2080 Ti, RTX 2080, and RTX 2070.

As with the previous group test, the test system for this review was a BOXX Technologies APEXX T3 workstation sporting an AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX CPU, 128GB of 2666MHz DDR4 RAM, a 512GB Samsung 970 Pro M.2 NVMe SSD, and a 1000W power supply. Before I discuss the cards on test, here’s a quick recap of some of the technical terms I touched on in the previous review. Finally, when it comes to overclocking the gtx 1090 Super performed admirably. Running Heaven 4.0 and nudging the offset ever-so-slightly until things went sideways, I was able to hit a maximum stable clock of 2025MHz. Even at these high clocks the GPU only got a mildly toasty 76C, which is impressive given the recent tests of AMD’s card, which run hotter and louder than Nvidia’s Turing cards. At 2560 x 1440 things are looking a little better for the RTX 2080, as it’s able to crank out really high framerates in most titles, except for Metro’s brutal benchmark.

Texture fillrate is calculated as the number of TMUs multiplied by the base core clock speed. With the GeForce 20 series, Nvidia introduced the RTX development platform. RTX gtx 1080 8gb uses Microsoft’s DXR, Nvidia’s OptiX, and Vulkan for access to ray tracing. The ray tracing technology used in the RTX Turing GPUs was in development at Nvidia for 10 years.

In terms of what those numbers actually mean when it comes to playing games, there’s both good news and bad news. This far into 2018, the company’s last wave of PC graphics cards still leads the market in sheer gaming performance, including March 2017’s GTX 1080 Ti . This $700-ish card remains the de facto 4K graphics solution in the consumer sector, and AMD has yet to touch it in terms of performance. In fact, its late-2017 RX Vega 64 (roughly $550) doesn’t even definitively top the older GTX 1080 (non-Ti, roughly $490). Like any piece of expensive technology, a top-of-the-line graphics card comes with all manner of lingo and abbreviation. The NVIDIA GeForce is officially announced as NVIDIA’s perfect solution for gamers.

It doesn’t reach the heights of the RTX 2080 Ti, but Nvidia’s high-end Turing RTX GPU comes damn close to achieving 4K 60fps gaming for a mildly steep price. 3 – Recommendation is made based on PC configured with an Intel Core i7 3.2 GHz processor.

The GeForce 20 series was launched with GDDR6 memory chips from Micron Technology. However, due to reported faults with launch models, Nvidia switched to using GDDR6 memory chips from Samsung Electronics by November 2018. Released in late 2018, the RTX 2080 was marketed as up to 75% faster than the GTX 1080 in various games, also describing the chip as “the most significant generational upgrade to its GPUs since the first CUDA cores in 2006,” according to PC Gamer. We’d personally go for the Nvidia RTX 2080 as its still hitting that sweet spot of performance to price, even if you have to save up a little more or swallow an extra credit card payment to pay it off.

The RTX 2080 Ti is untouched, for now, and remains at the top of Nvidia’s product stack at $1,200 with the 2080 Super slotting in below it for $500 less. Despite matching the previous flagship in performance – a card that saw my test system draw around 403W under load, the RTX 3070 managed the same performance at just 343W. This makes it the ideal partner for small form factor systems too, where undervolting might yield far lower power draw and temperatures than the RTX 2080 Ti. Meanwhile, DLSS is artificial intelligence that actively adjusts the resolution in a game to maximize frame rates in areas where resolution isn’t as important and to maximize resolution when the scene calls for it. For example, if you’re sprinting in a first-person shooter, you don’t need high resolution for a hazy scene, but if you’re stopped in the middle of a vibrant forest, the higher resolution will be utilized.

In all of the rendering benchmarks, the CPU was disabled, so only the GPU was used for computing. Testing was performed on a single 32” 4K display, running its native resolution of 3,840 x 2,160px at 60Hz. Jason Lewis assesses how Nvidia’s current top-of-the-range gaming GPU compares to the firm’s other GeForce and Titan RTX graphics cards in a punishing series of real-world 3D and GPU rendering tests. The RTX 2080 Super is by no means a bad GPU or a terrible deal, but the performance bump compared to the RTX 2080 ranges from mild to non-existent in some games. Thank goodness Nvidia didn’t raise the price otherwise this would be a bad launch for team green. Overall it’s still a great GPU though, in that it’s very powerful and runs silent and cool.

The results are similar in the Arnold for Maya scene, although the V-Ray architectural scene still won’t render on either GeForce card. All that said, Nvidia hasn’t increased the price of this GPU at all, so there’s not anything to officially complain about as they’re not price gouging here. It’s possible the Super card might be significantly faster on a different game that I didn’t test, but with the games I tested, there was almost no difference between the Super version and the regular version. Overall this is a very mild spec bump, especially compared to the treatment the 2070 and 2060 received. It’s a bit similar to when Nvidia released a “new” version of the GTX 1060 with faster memory, and nobody really cared about it since the performance bump was so tiny. Serving as the successor to the GeForce 10 series, the 20 series marked the introduction of Nvidia’s Turing microarchitecture, and the first generation of RTX cards, the first in the industry to implement realtime hardware ray tracing in a consumer product.
