GDDR6 can also push up to 16Gbps per pin, but there is no immediate promise of that for the new GPUs. The 2080 Ti will host 11GB of GDDR6 on a 352-bit memory bus, with memory bandwidth in the neighborhood of 620GB/s. The RTX 2080 will host 8GB of GDDR6 on a 256-bit interface and therefore allow 448GB/s memory bandwidth. Another major point of consideration is NVIDIA’s decision to use a dual-axial reference card, eliminating much of the value of partner cards at the low-end. Moving away from blower reference cards and toward dual-fan cards will most immediately impact board partners, something that could lead to a slow crawl of NVIDIA expanding its direct-to-consumer sales and bypassing partners.

With this latest series of Nvidia GeForce graphics cards, it seems Team Green is trying to up the cost of its graphics cards to be more premium than in prior years. This Turing card’s performance still justifies its relatively high price and is only slightly limited next to its more powerful siblings and rivals on our best graphics cards list. So, unless you need 4K 60fps performance, you can skip the RTX 2080 Ti for the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080. Here, Noctis and pals could romp around the plains of Duscae at 55-60fps on the GTX 1080Ti with all of Nvidia’s super graphics switched on at Highest, but the gigabyte gtx 1060 3gb could only match that speed when I disabled the intensive VXAO option. At 4K, the GTX 1080Ti managed a steady 45-47fps on Highest with all of Nvidia’s fancy graphics effects turned off, whereas the RTX 2080 could only get between 40-43fps on the same settings. Elsewhere, however, the two cards were pretty much neck-and-neck at both 4K and 1440p. In Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, for example, the RTX 2080 managed a very respectable 52fps average on Ultra High at 4K in its internal benchmark, but the GTX 1080Ti was right alongside it with its average of 51fps. What’s more, the GTX 1080Ti actually pulled ahead at 1440p, reaching an average of 79fps on Ultra High compared with the RTX’s 71fps. Still, I can only work with what I’ve got, and really, I would have hoped a top of the line Core i5 would have proved a decent enough partner for it.

The chip features 8 GB of GDDR6 (next-gen) memory featured across a 256-bit bus and clocked at 14 GB/s.
In 2016, NVIDIA announced their Pascal GPUs which would be featured in their top to bottom GeForce lineup. After the launch of Maxwell, NVIDIA gained a lot of experience in the efficiency department which they put a focus on since their Kepler GPUs. Now, with an enhanced FinFET process available, NVIDIA is taking the efficiency lead beyond where it was previously, is completely unrivaled by the competition. With Volta, NVIDIA focused on the AI and HPC market but most of the features that Volta supported aren’t necessarily needed in the gaming department. That’s where Turing comes in, a GPU designed solely for the consumer segment. If a GPU doesn’t have enough graphics memory for a computational task, it has to send data out to system RAM.
In the V-Ray trolls scene, the Titan RTX – in which the entire scene fits into on-board memory – performs much better than the GeForce Ti, while the GeForce RTX 2080 won’t render the scene at all. Neither the 2080 nor the 2080 Ti will render the other two scenes, crashing every time in the V-Ray architectural scene, and quitting with out-of-memory errors in the Arnold for Maya scene. The viewport benchmarks include many of the key DCC applications – both general-purpose 3D software like 3ds Max, Blender and Maya, and more specialist tools like Substance Painter – plus CAD package SolidWorks and game engine Unreal Engine. If you discount the Titan RTX, which occupies a halfway house between traditional gaming and workstation cards, it’s Nvidia’s current top-of-the-range consumer GPU.
Even with DLSS and ray tracing enabled at 4K the RTX 2080 Ti still had a commanding lead. Still a clear win overall for the RTX 3070, though, given it costs a third of the price. Still, with an average 15.5 percent increase in frame rates and the occasional 47.4 percent outlier, RTX graphics offer a solid improvement over GTX — enough so that the RTX 2080 could be worth an extra $200, depending on how much you value the performance boost.
