Best Benchtop Thickness Planer

In the month that I’ve had the DeWalt 735, this benchtop planer has saved me time, sweat, and backache, and my finished products have turned out better. While I haven’t used any of the 735s competitors, I don’t think I need to. If you’ve got the budget, I would highly recommend picking one of these up. It figures to be one of the most used tools in my wood shop for a long time. is one of the best benchtop wood planers on the market. It handles all types of wood, from soft pine to walnut and mahogany, smoothly and uniformly.

A four column carriage lock keeps the cutterhead in place when planing with it and prevent any movement that may cause snipe. Dust collection is easy with the DW734, as it comes equipped with dust hood which you can easily attach to a shop vac for effective dust collection. One of the most important feature of the DW735 planer is the 2 speed gear box it’s equipped with.

With the benchtop planer turned off, lower the cutterhead onto the board to get a starting point. Remove the board, turn on the machine, and run the board through the planer. Continue to lower the cutterhead for each pass until you’ve shaved the board down to the desired height. This planer has a 15-amp motor that produces 8,500 RPMs. It has a two-knife cutterhead and a depth of cut of up to 1/8-inch.

Furthermore, because this wood planer is so easy to use, this accuracy is not dependent upon your experience. The one thing I was most concerned about with this small planner was dust and chip collection. I’ve got a pretty robust dust collection system in my shop, however the amount of dust and chips that a planer produce gave me reason for concern. The DW735 has a built-in chip blower mounted at the rear of the unit. It helps push chips out from the unit and into the dust collection pipe. This combined with the dust collector creates a system that works exceptionally well.

Very basically, a planer is a cutting tool that makes the top face of a board parallel to the bottom board. You set the cut depth and feed the board into one end. A powered roller grabs the wood and pushes it under the cutter head, which trims anywhere from 1/32” to ⅛” off the top before pushing it out the other side.

Last week I was running some walnut thru my 735 and it came upon some wonky grain and bogged down and shut off. I let it cool down and pushed the reset circuit breaker ( and that’s what it is called). I found out that the 18 amp breaker becomes weaker and weaker, each time it trips.

I don’t buy a 1/2 ton truck when I need a 1 ton truck, what you experienced was a hobbyist grade piece of equipment ware out quickly doing probably pro level work. If you bought a 209HH you wouldn’t have to write a long review like this one. My point is I knew what I was going to do when I bought my truck 13 years ago, it still works fine. I bought my joiner its a 8″ PJ-882HH which is a phenomenal piece of equipment.
