Dewalt Planer
We were looking to see which planers had enough power to sustain the no-load feed rates throughout the different boards that were planed. There are ways to stretch the life of your planer blades. You can do much of the work with other tools, reserving your planer for the lighter duty finish cuts. The planer can remove a lot of material fast, especially with softwoods, and cut up to 1/8″ per pass, but we rarely remove that much material at a time.
And it’s not a problem for anyone who has a more robust dust collection system than I do. I’m also noticing the blades are getting huge gouges in them. This article is a troubleshooting guide for problems and malfunctions common to most electric power tools. Own an Ace Store Your ultimate power tool for business success.
Because the hose enters the rear of the unit it sits directly above boards coming out the finished end of the planer. This means you’ve have to keep the hose lifted up and out of the way so the exiting board doesn’t run into the hose. This is a minor issue but one I’d like to see addressed in the next model. I scored this package with the dewalt Hand tools stand a year or so ago for $599 on one of Home Depots one day deals. If one were interested in a stand, that’s the only comparable or better deal I’ve ever seen on this planer.
The motor is durable and able to sustain heavy-duty lumber work. It has a blade speed of 10,000RPM making 96 cuts per inch. DeWalt`s disposable reversible blades also eliminate the need for sharpening. Because the cutter head sits on four threaded posts – which reduces movement of the cutter head – there is very little snipe with this model. With the three-blade cutter head spinning at 10,000 RPM, the cut comes out very smooth even at the faster dimensioning speed.
Product reviews on this site contain our opinion of a product or service. We will always strive for objectivity and transparency in our reviews. Planers with built-in gauges will allow you to quickly determine the height of the cutterhead from the planer’s deck. This measure expresses how thick a piece of wood will be once it passes through the planer. It won’t go any lower than your depth stop will allow. Funny I was just looking at this model yesterday and almost pulled the trigger. A little big more initially but it has great reviews and the cutter head will be great. While power is extremely important, it can also be extremely hindered by poor accuracy.
At the lower finishing speed, the material has a finish that is almost smooth enough to skip sanding. Lately, we’ve been working on quite a few custom woodworking projects including pieces such as desks, credenzas, dining tables, even a couple of custom mahogany gates. Each of these pieces requires the use of various hardwoods. In the past, we’ve had our lumber milled and planed at the lumber yard, mostly because our small benchtop planer in the shop wasn’t quite up to handling a large amount of hardwood. However, as we’ve picked up more custom work, it became clear that having a decent planer would help save time and money, so it was time to upgrade.
Unless the raised ridges are wider than 1/16”, this small operation usually restores smooth planer performance for a while. You’ve essentially misaligned the nicks in the blades. The nicks used to line up , but they don’t align any more so the ridge disappears. There’s no question that the 13-inch DeWalt 735 benchtop planer is expensive.
While very subjective, we ranked the planers based on the samples of Maple shown below. Above you can see a graphic showing the ratio of the no-load feed rate compared to the average loaded feed rate . This just gives a good relative comparison of how the motors performed under load. The DEWALT 735X and the Triton TPT125 were able to keep the feed rate much closer to the no-load rate compared to the rest of the field. Here I am applying coat of paste wax to the bed of my DEWALT DW735 planer.
