I would definitely recommend this planer to anyone serious about their wood. Portable thickness planers have to squeeze a lot of power into a small footprint that can be reasonably moved around a shop or to a job site. But even within this limitation there are some substantial differences in size and weight of the machines we’ve tested. But every machine is capable of planing boards 12 to 13 inches wide and 6 inches tall. The specifics and the differences are show in the lists below. The big chip on this planer blade was caused by a hidden nail embedded in a board.
While manufacturers label most planers with ranges between 12 and 13 inches , this metric doesn’t tell the whole story. For example, a 12-inch planer can handle a board 12 inches in width, but that does not say how thick a piece of wood the planer can handle. A benchtop planer is very use-specific, meaning it only serves one purpose—and as a one-trick pony, it’s not the most common tool present in the average workshop. This finishing speed is nearly twice as slow, and gives much nicer planing results. It also helps with dealing with difficult, reversing grains and figured woods. The $499.88 price is a hair over Black Friday 2019 pricing of $499.00, which was the lowest price I have ever seen on this planer combo. A good price on this planer is usually dewalt Hand tools $525 to $575, and that’s typically after a $25 off $100+ promo or similar. $500 is a great price, and I don’t think I’ve ever seen it priced lower than $499.00.
The planer can make a maximum cut depth of 1/8 inch and a depth capacity of 6 inches. The total capacity of 13 inches was ample enough for me and should suffice for most professionals too. The DEWALT DW735 two speed thickness planer is one of the best thickness planers in use today. I don’t buy a 1/2 ton truck when I need a 1 ton truck, what you experienced was a hobbyist grade piece of equipment ware out quickly doing probably pro level work. If you bought a 209HH you wouldn’t have to write a long review like this one. My point is I knew what I was going to do when I bought my truck 13 years ago, it still works fine. I bought my joiner its a 8″ PJ-882HH which is a phenomenal piece of equipment.
