What I’ve just described above is, of course, raw performance speeds with a Core i5. These new 20-series cards will succeed Nvidia’s current top-of-the-line GPUs, the GeForce GTX 1070, GTX 1080 and GTX 1080 Ti. While the company usually waits to launch the more powerful Ti version of a GPU, this time around, it’s releasing the RTX 2080 and RTX 2080 Ti at once.
Note that we were originally hearing a 1-3 month latency on partner cards, but that looks to be only for advanced models that are just now entering production. All three of the new RTX cards will feature built-in support for real-time ray tracing, a rendering and lighting technique for photorealistic graphics that gaming companies are starting to introduce this year. Square Enix have yet to patch in the RTX update for Shadow of the Tomb Raider, for instance, and Final Fantasy XV is still awaiting its DLSS update. By November 2018, MSI was offering nine different gtx 1080 8gb-based graphics cards. Released in December 2018, the line’s Titan RTX was initially priced at $2500, significantly more than the $1300 then needed for a GeForce RTX 2080 Ti. The RTX 2080 isn’t quite as powerful as the RTX 2080 Ti, but you won’t find any other mainstream graphics cards as powerful as the 2080. If you’re seeking a high end graphics card that’ll cost less than $500, you’re stuck with the $399 (about 320, AU$570) Radeon RX Vega 64.

In the V-Ray trolls scene, the Titan RTX – in which the entire scene fits into on-board memory – performs much better than the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti, while the GeForce RTX 2080 won’t render the scene at all. Neither the 2080 nor the 2080 Ti will render the other two scenes, crashing every time in the V-Ray architectural scene, and quitting with out-of-memory errors in the Arnold for Maya scene. The viewport benchmarks include many of the key DCC applications – both general-purpose 3D software like 3ds Max, Blender and Maya, and more specialist tools like Substance Painter – plus CAD package SolidWorks and game engine Unreal Engine. If you discount the Titan RTX, which occupies a halfway house between traditional gaming and workstation cards, it’s Nvidia’s current top-of-the-range consumer GPU.
As with the previous group test, the test system for this review was a BOXX Technologies APEXX T3 workstation sporting an AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX CPU, 128GB of 2666MHz DDR4 RAM, a 512GB Samsung 970 Pro M.2 NVMe SSD, and a 1000W power supply. Before I discuss the cards on test, here’s a quick recap of some of the technical terms I touched on in the previous review. Finally, when it comes to overclocking the RTX 2080 Super performed admirably. Running Heaven 4.0 and nudging the offset ever-so-slightly until things went sideways, I was able to hit a maximum stable clock of 2025MHz. Even at these high clocks the GPU only got a mildly toasty 76C, which is impressive given the recent tests of AMD’s card, which run hotter and louder than Nvidia’s Turing cards. At 2560 x 1440 things are looking a little better for the RTX 2080, as it’s able to crank out really high framerates in most titles, except for Metro’s brutal benchmark.
With this latest series of Nvidia GeForce graphics cards, it seems Team Green is trying to up the cost of its graphics cards to be more premium than in prior years. This Turing card’s performance still justifies its relatively high price and is only slightly limited next to its more powerful siblings and rivals on our best graphics cards list. So, unless you need 4K 60fps performance, you can skip the RTX 2080 Ti for the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080. The factory overclocked GeForce RTX 2080 Founders Edition graphics card features a next-gen 8-phase power supply for maximum overclocking and dual-axial 13-blade fans coupled with a new vapor chamber for ultra-cool and quiet performance. This isn’t a massive problem as far as I’m concerned, as there are plenty of cheaper graphics cards out there that can already do max settings at 1080p perfectly well without forcing you to drop north of 700 big ones on it.
