With this latest series of Nvidia GeForce graphics cards, it seems Team Green is trying to up the cost of its graphics cards to be more premium than in prior years. This Turing card’s performance still justifies its relatively high price and is only slightly limited next to its more powerful siblings and rivals on our best graphics cards list. So, unless you need 4K 60fps performance, you can skip the RTX 2080 Ti for the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080. The factory overclocked GeForce RTX 2080 Founders Edition graphics card features a next-gen 8-phase power supply for maximum overclocking and dual-axial 13-blade fans coupled with a new vapor chamber for ultra-cool and quiet performance. This isn’t a massive problem as far as I’m concerned, as there are plenty of cheaper graphics cards out there that can already do max settings at 1080p perfectly well without forcing you to drop north of 700 big ones on it.

Now that we’re a couple of months into the RTX laptop era, it’s time to pause and look at how this first wave of laptops with Nvidia’s hyped-up new mobile graphics technology fares in real-world testing. Unless the tasks you are throwing at it require more than 11GB of graphics memory, it comes very close to the performance of the Titan RTX, for less than half the cost. Synthetic benchmarks don’t accurately predict how a GPU will perform in production, but they do provide a way to compare the cards on test with older models, since scores for a wide range of GPUs are available online. Unlike previous reviews, I haven’t included Cinebench here, since the last version to feature a GPU benchmark is now over six years old. The first set of applications either don’t use OptiX for ray tracing, or don’t make it possible to turn the OptiX backend on and off, so it isn’t possible to assess the impact of RTX acceleration on performance. Without any ray tracing or DLSS features, the investigation showed Shadow of the Tomb Raider to prefer the RTX 2080 Ti at 1080p and 1440p, with clear leads for the older card.

Even with DLSS and ray tracing enabled at 4K the RTX 2080 Ti still had a commanding lead. Still a clear win overall for the RTX 3070, though, given it costs a third of the price. Still, with an average 15.5 percent increase in frame rates and the occasional 47.4 percent outlier, RTX graphics offer a solid improvement over GTX — enough so that the RTX 2080 could be worth an extra $200, depending on how much you value the performance boost.

The Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 may no longer be the flagship GPU du jour, with RTX 3080 just announced at Nvidia’s September 1 event. However, it still very much holds its own in a souped up gaming rig, and is one of the most powerful gaming cards, especially in the RTX line. Artificial intelligence is driving the greatest technology advancement in history, and Turing is bringing it to computer graphics. On July 2, 2019, the GeForce RTX Super line of cards was announced, which comprises higher-spec versions of the 2060, 2070 and 2080. Each of the Super models were offered for a similar price as older models but with improved specs. In July 2019, NVidia stated the “SUPER” graphics cards in the GeForce RTX 20 series, to be introduced, had a 15% performance advantage over the GeForce RTX 2060.

The RTX 2080 Ti is untouched, for now, and remains at the top of Nvidia’s product stack at $1,200 with the 2080 Super slotting in below it for $500 less. Despite matching the previous flagship in performance – a card that saw my test system draw around 403W under load, the RTX 3070 managed the same performance at just 343W. This makes it the ideal partner for small form factor systems too, where undervolting might yield far lower power draw and temperatures than the RTX 2080 Ti. Meanwhile, DLSS is artificial intelligence that actively adjusts the resolution in a game to maximize frame rates in areas where resolution isn’t as important and to maximize resolution when the scene calls for it. For example, if you’re sprinting in a first-person shooter, you don’t need high resolution for a hazy scene, but if you’re stopped in the middle of a vibrant forest, the higher resolution will be utilized.

By introducing AI into mainstream graphics cards, Nvidia claims all Turing-based GPUs will be able to process anti-aliasing eight times faster. The can also tap into a new Deep Learning Super Sampling feature that’s much more efficient at applying super sampling and anti-aliasing at the same time. Both features are unique to Nvidia’s latest graphics cards, but you’ll probably notice the immediate effects RT Cores and Nvidia RTX brings as it transforms puddles, glass and other reflective surfaces into mirrors for the first time in video games. Still, the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 gets yet another massive increase in price over previous generations of graphics cards. It wasn’t that long ago when the GTX 1080 Ti cost just as much at $699 (£669, AU$1,129).

In all of the rendering benchmarks, the CPU was disabled, so only the GPU was used for computing. Testing was performed on a single 32” 4K display, running its native resolution of 3,840 x 2,160px at 60Hz. The RTX 2080 Super is by no means a bad GPU or a terrible deal, but the performance bump compared to the RTX 2080 ranges from mild to non-existent in some games. Thank goodness Nvidia didn’t raise the price otherwise this would be a bad launch for team green. Overall it’s still a great GPU though, in that it’s very powerful and runs silent and cool.

Here, Noctis and pals could romp around the plains of Duscae at 55-60fps on the GTX 1080Ti with all of Nvidia’s super graphics switched on at Highest, but the could only match that speed when I disabled the intensive VXAO option. At 4K, the GTX 1080Ti managed a steady 45-47fps on Highest with all of Nvidia’s fancy graphics effects turned off, whereas the RTX 2080 could only get between 40-43fps on the same settings. Elsewhere, however, the two cards were pretty much neck-and-neck at both 4K and 1440p. In Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, for example, the RTX 2080 managed a very respectable 52fps average on Ultra High at 4K in its internal benchmark, but the GTX 1080Ti was right alongside it with its average of 51fps. What’s more, the GTX 1080Ti actually pulled ahead at 1440p, reaching an average of 79fps on Ultra High compared with the RTX’s 71fps. Still, I can only work with what I’ve got, and really, I would have hoped a top of the line Core i5 would have proved a decent enough partner for it.
