In 1937, the iconic eyewear brand was created to help reduce or “ban” sun glare for US Army Air Corps pilots, and thus the brand name was born. A year later the sleek metal frame was added, creating the Ray-Ban Aviators. To this day, you can still purchase these iconic sunglasses, among hundreds of other sunglasses and eyeglasses for men, women, and children. From timeless Aviators, to classic Wayfarer styles and everything in between, Ray-Ban offers countless styles and shapes to compliment any face shape or style. Since the 1930’s, Ray-Ban has expanded their collection to include a range of more trendy styles.
Classic lenses absorb 85% of visible light and block most blue light while providing a “natural vision” because they don’t alter the colors you see around you. If a company has been thriving for years, it’s safe to say they probably make pretty good stuff. Ray-Ban has been making functional and cool eyewear for over 80 years. Today, the brand still offers some of the best sunglasses on the market.
The eyewear brand was founded in 1936 by the company Bausch & Lomb. Like many other brands, Ray-Ban started in the military world, with the goal of creating aviation sunglasses to protect pilots from the intense blue and white hues of clubmaster the sky. They made a prototype for “anti-glare” that featured plastic frames and green plastic lenses. The prototype “banned” the harsh glare from the sun that the pilots had complained about, without causing any visibility reduction.
Narrowing the gap could add at least 10 billion euros to EssilorLuxottica’s value. The combination of lower costs and firmer leadership should help EssilorLuxottica narrow a persistent valuation discount. The group, which will soon control 20% of the global eyewear market, has no clear rival. Yet its stock has persistently lagged industry rivals like Japanese lens maker Hoya (7741.T) and luxury groups such as Kering (PRTP.PA).
Ray-Ban’s most popular sunglasses are the Wayfarer and Aviator models. During the 1950s, Ray-Ban released the Echelon , which had a squarer frame. In 1965, the Olympian I and II were introduced; they became popular when Peter Fonda wore them in the 1969 film Easy Rider. The Clubmaster has a browline frame and went on to become the third best selling sunglasses style of the 1980s, behind the Wayfarer and Aviator.
