This is the most ubiquitous fragrances on older men in America, especially the South. Much like my elders, I respect it, but I’d rather spend my time and money on any other piece of my collection. This is one of the few fragrances that I can smell in public and undoubtedly know exactly what the man is wearing. I prefer this oldie more then the new popular fragrences of today. It’s a classic and it’s for a real man not a teeny weeny. If you want to smell like a real man wear this and if you don’t want to smell like a man wear what’s available today.
Nothing to add but this is the epitome of masculine men’s fragrance. Redolent of pine trees and stale cigarette butts. A sharp, bitter synthetic “green” fragrance that’s more dated than Burt Reynolds’ mustache.
When it dries down I detect notes of ashy-smoke and leather, with the pine needles becoming part of the background. The top and middle have a somewhat dry chypre vibe. It’s a bit dirty at this point but that’s part of its appeal and what gives it character.
I’m only surprised that according to the pyramid, the pine needle and leather notes are in the mid-section, as I feel as though I get a blast of them instantly. That combination, to my nose, are what this perfume is all about – super-fresh pine modified by a soothing, rich brown leather. I do get polo dress shirts the basil and drop of gin in the opening too mind, but overall it’s a leather and pine binge. I would suggest this for the mature man, 40’s and up. You won’t be getting huge compliments, as a matter of fact the opposite. This is a mature man’s scent and should be worn for personal enjoyment.
Coudn’t do it as a kid smelling this and can’t do it now. The opening is very, very strong and a little offensive, but it does dry down into something decent. Now, I’m willing to endure a bit, just a bit, of a stinky opening for a good middle and closing act. For me, it’s difficult to separate the emotional connection and memories associated with this scent from the actual fragrance. Polo is a deep, heavy scent; it’s a well-balanced blend of greens, herbs, spice, and leather. It can be overpowering if applied to heavily, but used in moderation it’s simply a great all-purpose fragrance.
