If the goal is to coerce exorbitant spending for gaming, they’re going to push people into next gen consoles instead. Although, considering the premium that comes with RGB lighting on PC hardware, a $40 price hike is probably par for the course. So, if you want the RGB lighting that the Gaming Trio has to offer, there’s nothing wrong with that. And, most benchmarks show those two GPUs pulling fairly even in performance. However, if you don’t want to overclock your GPU yourself, or if you like the RGB lighting that this card comes with, and you don’t mind paying a premium to get it, then the ROG STRIX might be best for your specific needs.

You can, at least, get away with a 550W power supply this time, though, unlike the RTX 2080 siblings which recommend 650W. Finally, power consumption was around 10W more under load for the system as a whole with the gtx 1080 8gb Super, which is maybe a little less than I was expecting and may well be more in other tests than the 3D Mark Port Royal I used here. There’s a slight downgrade, though, which is power consumption, which rises from 175W with the RTX 2070 to 215W with the new Super model. With our GeForce RTX 2070 test bench, we were able to play Strange Brigade and Forza Horizon 4 at a respectable 70 fps to 60 fps, respectively.
I’m genuinely impressed by how well both of these new AMD cards perform in 1440p gaming. In Far Cry 5, frame rates regularly exceeded 90 fps on max settings, and the 5700 XT outperformed Nvidia’s RTX 2060 Super and came close to the higher-priced 2070 Super in most of my tests. However, I did find that frame rates between the AMD and Nvidia cards can vary a lot depending on the game.
Now you’re probably saying to yourself at this stage, well that’s great but the 1080 is probably much cheaper and it’s only 5% less effective, and that’s where you would be wrong. Again, dependant on which card you go for, the 2070 is pretty much the same price as the 1080. It’s been developed to be competitive in pricing gigabyte gtx 1060 3gb whilst still being equipped with the latest tech. So to cut a long story short, the 1080 which is still a fantastic card, is the lesser of the 2 on a number of different tests and you should definitely reconsider if you were thinking about buying one.
