Geforce® Rtx 20 Series
New PCB design, 8pin+6pin power connector, providing amazing speed and energy efficiency. The tradeoff however, is that like the other Super cards, TDPs are going up. The RTX 2080 Super will be a 250 Watt card, 35W higher than the RTX 2080 and matching the TDP of the top-tier RTX 2080 Ti. As I simply can’t imagine a TU104 card matching RTX 2080 Ti, it would seem that NVIDIA’s energy efficiency is going to take a hit here. NVIDIA’s high clocks here mean that they have to really open up on power delivery in order to allow the TU104 GPU to sustain over 1800MHz, which comes at a fairly expensive point on the voltage/frequency curve.
If the goal is to coerce exorbitant spending for gaming, they’re going to push people into next gen consoles instead. Although, considering the premium that comes with RGB lighting on PC hardware, a $40 price hike is probably par for the course. So, if you want the RGB lighting that the Gaming Trio has to offer, there’s nothing gigabyte gtx 1060 3gb wrong with that. And, most benchmarks show those two GPUs pulling fairly even in performance. However, if you don’t want to overclock your GPU yourself, or if you like the RGB lighting that this card comes with, and you don’t mind paying a premium to get it, then the ROG STRIX might be best for your specific needs.
Now you’re probably saying to yourself at this stage, well that’s great but the 1080 is probably much cheaper and it’s only 5% less effective, and that’s where you would be wrong. Again, dependant on which card you go for, the 2070 is pretty much the same price as the 1080. It’s been developed to be competitive in pricing gtx 1090 whilst still being equipped with the latest tech. So to cut a long story short, the 1080 which is still a fantastic card, is the lesser of the 2 on a number of different tests and you should definitely reconsider if you were thinking about buying one. This is what allows us to be so confident in the products we recommend.
There were again some sizeable gains against the old RTX card of 22% at 1080p, 23% at 1440p and 20% at 4K, although bear in mind that RTX 2070 result is from a stock card – not a Founders Edition. Even so, it was a win over the GTX 1080 Ti here – so Nvidia’s claims are in part true, although not across the board. To start with we should look at pricing and as far as the RTX 2070 Super goes, things aren’t too bad. We’re looking at an MSRP of $499 (£475 in the UK), while the cheapest RTX 2070’s I could find were around the $479 (£479) mark.
It was always going to be difficult to give the ROG the top performance position due to its lower out-of-the-box clock speed. However what we are comfortable in saying is that the ROG takes the top spot when considering a solid all round option. Fantastic cooling which was both the coolest and quietest, a fantastic meaty design that boosts the aesthetics of any rig and the ability to manually overclock very efficiently. Asus’s brilliant heatsink and fan configuration overclocking the Rog becomes much more forgiving and achievable at high levels.
The Zotac Twin Fan also comes in at the same price as the Gigabyte Windforce OC as well (just under $500). The downside of the Zotac Twin Fan when compared to the Windforce OC, though, is that the Twin Fan comes with a slightly lower boost clock and it comes with less cooling . As an alternative option to the Gigabyte RTX 2070 SUPER Windforce OC, the Zotac Twin Fan is another RTX 2070 SUPER option that features a boost clock that goes as high as 1770MHz. It also comes with a bit of RGB lighting on the card’s logo for anyone looking to add some extra color to their system.
Built on the 12 nm process, and based on the TU106 graphics processor, in its TU A-A1 variant, the card supports DirectX 12 Ultimate. Additionally, the DirectX 12 Ultimate capability guarantees support for hardware-raytracing, variable-rate shading and more, in upcoming video games. The TU106 graphics processor is a large chip with a die area of 445 mm² and 10,800 million transistors. It features 2304 shading units, 144 texture mapping units, and 64 ROPs. Also included are 288 tensor cores which help improve the speed of machine learning applications.
It’s the ideal option if you need higher framerates for a 120Hz or 144Hz gaming monitor. It’s time for RTX 2060 to finally show why it’s a worthy contender for your next GPU. At $349, it’s significantly cheaper than RTX 2070, which goes for $499. With a simple eye test, we can tell that the rough 10% difference is noticeable, but that it also depends on the game. It was somewhat expected that RTX 2060 would perform better in those types of games, but it’s also interesting that RTX 2070 doesn’t increase its performance there either.
Both the RTX 2060 Super and gtx 1090 Super look physically the same as their predecessors, though, which means they’re very well-built and look great. A tough back plate helps to strengthen the graphics card and to provide more reliable structural stability. I paid $799 for my 1080ti and quite a few people said THAT was a high price.
All that extra hardware demands more power, with the reference RTX 2070 requiring 25 more watts than its predecessor, and the Founders Edition demanding 10 more than that, at 185W. That power flows to the Founders Edition via a single eight-pin connector at the very end of card, rather than the usual edge placement. I usually loathe that configuration, but it works here, mostly because the Nvidia RTX 2070 Founders Edition is so tiny.
