In daylight the dial reflects light from different facets of the multilayer structure, while at night things get a little harder to read. The shapes along the way play with whatever light managed to enter the watch and again just looks amazing. Starting with the bezel and we’re off to the best possible start. The octagon is a classic shape that works so well on a watch.
I do like the world-time function as it displays the time of oddball timezones such as India and it’s handy when scheduling meetings. The manageable size of this watch is also a big plus as mentioned above. I found the digital functions such as world time, stopwatch, and timer useless. The screen is so small that it’s impossible to read while running.
Last year the all black model – an unlimited, in-production piece – was trading above RRP on the grey market after shops sold out. All the functions can take a bit of time to get used to, but they are otherwise quite straightforward. A clever feature that this watch has is an anti-block function that makes the hands change their position when you press the light mod. This is so you can read the digital screen even if the time is such that the analog hands block it. Not a small watch by any means, but it’s also significantly smaller than many popular G-Shocks, which measure closer to 50mm and have unusual geometry that can make them a tough wear.
And with its performance and durability, this watch, just like the other G-Shock watches, is incredibly durable. While not something you’d wear as a dress piece (unless you’re being willfully transgressive, which I’m on board for) the case has an undeniable ability to slide gracefully under a shirt cuff. While this is a full featured G-Shock with timers, alarms, multiple g shock watch time zones, and so forth, that, to me, isn’t what this watch is all about. This is not a tactical watch and I’m not recommending it as a tool, I’m recommending it solely and exclusively as a design object. When shopping for bang for buck EDC watches, very specific brands and models come to mind. And at the very top of the list is the humble Casio G-Shock.
Its face features large indices and contrasting hands, while its date complication is represented with a subdial at the 9 o’clock position rather than as part of its digital display. Said display is g shock watch in a sleeker angled window at the 4 o’clock position. Another upgrade the GA-2100 gets is a dual LED system, one that lights up the lumed hands , and a backlight for the digital display window.
At £99.90, it sits at the least expensive price point across the entire brand. Frankly, for that amount of money, if you want to see what all the fuss is about, it’s almost hard to justify not buying it. The case has a diameter of 45.4mm, a thickness of 18mm, and lug-to-lug of 47mm. With that said, it is a big watch, which doesn’t really come as a surprise for a G-shock.
