Every watch has a relationship between the dial and the case. The GA-2100 is interesting because the dial and case seem to all be part of the same object, as opposed to being distinct elements that make up a complete timepiece. Here is where the Royal Oak comparison actually makes the most sense – that’s a watch whose style is built on a harmony between the angular case and its integrated bracelet.
As a result, it has become difficult to find, with only limited availability, and prices on the secondhand market increasing as a result. Today, the G-shock design has become iconic and is associated with durable and rugged timepieces. It is notoriously known for being able to hold up to all kinds of shocks, bangs, and mistreatment, yet still, continue to function properly. That in itself is a neat touch, and it’s these less traditional features that lend this piece fizz. It isn’t a cheap Royal Oak wannabe, it’s unmistakably a G-Shock – and it works as a watch on its own terms. If you were at school in the 1990s, you’ll remember G-Shock-wearing classmates slamming their watches on the ground to prove their indestructibility. We have been wearing the CasiOak this past fortnight and it has that same hard-as-nails quality. The hands have luminescence applied to them to help with legibility in the dark, and this is a good thing since it also means you save battery as you won’t have to turn on the light every time you just want to read the time.
In the standard display, the digital screen shows running seconds, but it can also be set to display the stopwatch, timer, alarms, as well as different time zones. As we expect, the watch is digital, but still presents the analog time with an hour and minutes hand. When you have a fully digital watch, you don’t have to think too much about legibility, g shock protection but since this is also digital, it is quite important. But the good news is that the GA A is actually quite legible thanks to the contrast the hands and indices provide against the black background. photo by Watchadvice.com.au.The watch has a resin case which is black. In addition to this, Casio has also used carbon fiber for the construction.
Stay away from close-ups and avoid questions and you’ll remain the baller of the party. And perhaps that’s the most important factor of all in explaining the GA-2100’s success. Many of us harbour warm feelings towards the G-Shock because it is a watch we grew up with – possibly, even, the first watch we ever owned. So, a G-Shock that one can wear unironically whether you’re into watches, streetwear or – as is increasingly the case – both?
The all-black sombre elegance of the GA A1ER, the classic Casioak, pairs well even with a nice olive green shirt and tailored chinos. The hidden benefit of slim wrists, is the ability to get even quite baby g shock chunky watches under a nice cuff and, for me, these types of style contrasts rule. OK, so the business meeting changed to another bloody Teams video chat , but no one knew, as the sharp shirt remained.
