And with its performance and durability, this watch, just like the other G-Shock watches, is incredibly durable. While not something you’d wear as a dress piece (unless you’re being willfully transgressive, which I’m on board for) the case has an undeniable ability to slide gracefully under a shirt cuff. While this is a full featured G-Shock with timers, alarms, multiple time zones, and so forth, that, to me, isn’t what this watch is all about. This is not a tactical watch and I’m not recommending it as a tool, I’m recommending it solely and exclusively as a design object. When shopping for bang for buck EDC watches, very specific brands and models come to mind. And at the very top of the list is the humble Casio G-Shock.
An auto-LED light also provides great legibility to the analogue-digital dial and LCD display. The resin band combined with 200-metre depth rating makes the GA-2100 the go-to piece come rain or shine. Features such as time zone settings, stopwatch function, countdown timers and alarms provide versatility and unbeatable utility. (The GA A and GA A also have Neo-Brite luminous hands.) On the surface this seems like an odd inclusion, but it solves 2 problems. It keeps the dial somewhat symmetrical; if you try to imagine the dial without it there, it would look odd. It also keeps the digital display compact and unobtrusive. While the handset is bright white and filled with lume, the markers are off-white, almost gray. They match the color of the lume on the hands but are not lumed at all. I would have liked to see Casio lume the markers as it can be difficult to read and orient yourself when reading the time in the dark.
The camouflage pattern printed on the bezel of the GA-2100SU model create great looking new designs. The strap features a quick-release mechanism g shock watch which I have not seen on a G-Shock before. It makes one wonder if Casio will be offering alternate straps for the CasiOak. This would make sense and be on-brand for Casio as G-Shocks have always fit a variety of personal styles. There is quite a bit of text that adorns the case of the CasiOak.
But Casio has been making watches in loud colors in this general shape for years, so why does the GA-2100 suddenly seem to have claimed the mantle of Royal Oak on a hot dog budget? The answer, I think, is in how this watch wears, which is really unlike any other G-Shock I’ve strapped to my wrist. In traditional G-Shock fashion, the watch has text printed on the bezel in order to help you know which functions are for what. Overall, although the dial is quite busy, you have to keep in mind there is a lot of fit on this dual-time watch when you have all those functions, and Casio has done a great job keeping it clean. There is also an day of the week sub-dial at around 9 o’clock, with matching coloring on the markers. A few of my coworkers thought that the CasiOak was a “cheap Wal-Mart watch”.
