I wouldn’t recommend for every day use. No brand captures all-American flair quite like Polo Ralph Lauren. Established in the late ’60s, the original men’s line perfected preppy style by transforming Ivy League and country club wear into everyday apparel that promised simple sophistication. Representing a true Americana personage, the lifestyle brand continues to deliver cult-classic designs, including the polo player and bear motifs, which seamlessly adapt to each passing cultural obsession. Ralph Lauren Polo Red Eau de Toilette is a woody, oriental men’s cologne, perfect for the Renaissance man who appreciates a bold, masculine, fresh fragrance.
Perhaps this sort of thing made a lasting impression on me as a kid – Brut and soap-on-a-rope for Xmas, I don’t know. But I’m learning that the woodsy/green/leathers with earthy patch/vetiver/oakmoss drydowns are usually winners for me. The tobacco note in Polo, as elsewhere, only serves to make me love this more. Got a 237ml bottle of this as Xmas present to myself – ‘cos I is werf it. I never wore this on a regular basis in the past but I believe the recently purchased bottle I have, though true to what I remember, has the overall heft and base notes dialed back.
I feel limited wearing this as a lot of people I come into contact with don’t like it. Friends that have smelled it often have a face of disgust and say that it smells like a grandpa, or that it is strong, but I rarely have experienced someone actually liking it. Best way I can describe it is that it smells like money. Seriously, the old style paper notes, imagine a fat roll of money and sniff it. Not the performance monster it was but still lasts for days on end on clothes. My uncle had had this as his signature scent for over 30 years.
Also woods and patchouli along with moss, and a hint of leather. I like this scent the most when initially applied as I can smell the pine and fir. Under drydown it becomes exclusively tobacco, leather, and woods. ralph lauren t shirt Moderate sillage and strong longevity. I’m just not that great of a fan of the scent – especially in drydown – the tobacco and leather kind of ruin it for me; I would prefer a more natural forest scent.
It’s a masterpiece with a mixes and mysterious notes. I have to add I can feel cinnamon all the time although not mentioned. Stop by Sephora (it’s a mainstay there) and spritz some on your pressure points. What I am saying is DON’T BLIND BUY. On the plus side, sillage and longevity are awesome, even the reformulated version. A classic that to me is in no way dated. A drydown as remarkable as Rive Gauche, Opium for men and M7.
Legend has it that my wife was taken in by me as this is what I wore when I first met her. 20 years later she still swears that she remembers me with this perfume. It’s still her favourite, though I now own a lot of perfumes her eyes light up whenever i wear this one.
