Let’s start with the shape, the GA2100-1a1 appeared on the gram and elsewhere online, and the case shape and dial just grabbed my eyes. It distinctively looks like an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak. The now discontinued two/tone grey G-Shock GA-2100ET-8A matches damn well with some grey cotton sweatpants, strategically worn with a more formal navy merino knit for those Zoom meetings. For a G-Shock, it feels slender at 45mm and with a short 48.5mm lug to lug and no weight, it’s a perfect daily wearer. The bonus is the clever world time mode allowing me to keep up with the editorial team in Melbourne while being locked down here in Norway. While I love mechanical watches, this is just an understated, feather-light presence that does its job quietly. It’s not only remarkably affordable for a watch that is basking in such intense hype, it’s also notably affordable for a G-Shock.
But the so called CasiOak takes it a step further, blending not just the dial but it’s associated furniture into the same hunk of red plastic. So what we’re left with in terms of real world use on the dial is a pretty functional two-hander. The sword shaped hour and minute hands are the only components of the GA-2100 that are not red, thanks to some lume that could be stronger, so they stand out quite well. The twelve indices around the dial’s perimeter are in a slightly lighter shade than the dial’s base, and they’re raised, giving the dial a bit of depth and lending an extra touch of legibility. The GA-2100 has already been dubbed the “CasiOak” all over the watch internet, and other similar mashup nicknames are out there as well.
The only parts in contrast are the hardware buttons, strap screws and buckle. This sounds good but I’d actually far prefer they were all PVD or DLC black too similar to what I have on my RedOut edition from last year.
