Last year the all black model – an unlimited, in-production piece – was trading above RRP on the grey market after shops sold out. All the functions can take a bit of time to get used to, but they are otherwise quite straightforward. A clever feature that this watch has is an anti-block function that makes the hands change their position when you press the light mod. This is so you can read the digital screen even if the time is such that the analog hands block it. Not a small watch by any means, but it’s also significantly smaller than many popular G-Shocks, which measure closer to 50mm and have unusual geometry that can make them a tough wear.
The second, and larger problem, is that the screen is virtually impossible to read without the backlight, unless the dial happens to be completely bathed in direct sunlight. This watch can be had for $100 from a certain large online retailer. It has an octagonal case shape, not unlike a certain Holy Trinity brand’s famed sports g shock protection watch, and it’s bright red. If you wear this watch out in a public place, someone is going to comment on the fact that it’s red. You’ll notice people’s eyes gazing at it awkwardly, probably assuming it’s a new smart watch, or maybe assuming that you’re Meek Mill. For me, this is the appeal of my bright red G-Shock GA-2100.
And with its performance and durability, this watch, just like the other G-Shock watches, is incredibly durable. While not something you’d wear as a dress piece (unless you’re being willfully transgressive, which I’m on board for) the case has an undeniable ability to slide gracefully under a shirt cuff. While this is a full featured G-Shock with timers, alarms, multiple time zones, and so forth, that, to me, isn’t what this watch is all about. This is not a tactical watch and I’m not recommending it as a tool, I’m recommending it solely and exclusively as a design object. When shopping for bang for buck EDC watches, very specific brands and models come to mind. And at the very top of the list is the humble Casio G-Shock.
The GA2000HC-3A comes with an orange bezel and green band while the GA2000HC-7A has a translucent bezel with a blue case and white band. And the recent GA-2000 has some models with skeletonized hands and others with standard hands. i have many many memory with many watches, but the only one that is worthy is my all time favorite – the Tudor Submariner 79090. Looks like a standard 16mm G-Shock lug with quick release feature. So what are my thoughts after a few days of ownership and wearing.
A small digital display on the bottom right corner of the dial displays only a small amount of information at any given time. The standard view is the current time with running seconds. The display can also show the stopwatch, timer, alarms, and other time zones. Of the 3 colorways available, the version seen here is the most legible. The high contrast between the white hour markers and hands and the black dial make the CasiOak easy to read at a quick glance. Also, there are some online scams involving the GA A1 and other popular G-Shock models, where some e-commerce websites end up shipping a completely different model. Though Casio have developed premium lines for their other models, you could always count on the affordability of their general releases. But little by little Casio are leveling up their watches, giving even their most modest models upgrades in all the right places. The new analog-digital GA-2100 does just that and more with Casio’s rock-solid new case technology, while also sporting a retro-inspired design that fits right at home on a modern watch. Hands move away automatically from obstructing view of digital display. So good to see Casio putting a stop to the recent insanity of big, BIGGER, AND EVEN BIGGER!!!
