It bursts my millennial safe space bubble for sure. The strongest note here for me is tobacco, and the performance is decent. I will always have Polo in my collection, even if I decided to shrink it down to only 10 fragrances. This is my absolute favorite winter fragrance. The dry down, to me, smells like pine and freshly ground pepper, strong, masculine, professional.
Either the bottle now is diluted or my memory has diluted. Either way, I do enjoy it now but wish it can be the strong green beast-like in my memory. Polo is here for fans of beautiful, eternal things. Its name awakens association with a closed circle of the chosen and this circle has its rules and traditions. As a truly masculine perfume, Polo does not contain floral notes, apart from camomile, which has more grassy than floral scent. The opening of the composition is green and fresh, made of grassy notes of artemisia, basil and thyme, with spicy notes of cumin, coriander and cloves.
This bottle and scent helped shape me as a man. It made me want more out of my life. 30 years later and I’m still chasing that feeling I get when I think of the old Ralph Lauren stores, the ads, Ralph’s homes, etc. I would take this bottle polo dress shirts with me to my grave and bury me with it. 6 out of 5 scent when you remind yourself that this was when things were really good and perfume houses were in their ascendancy. Polo tried hard to add flankers, red, blue, that weird orange one.
By 1969, the Manhattan department store Bloomingdale’s sold Lauren’s men line exclusively. It was the first time that Bloomingdale’s had given a designer his own in-store shop. In 1971, Ralph Lauren Corporation launched a line of tailored shirts for women, which introduced the Polo player emblem, appearing on the shirt cuff.
When I catch a wiff of this, man it smells so manly. Fresh, earthy, spicy scent wrapped in dried tobacco leaves created for the MAN of the 70’s and 80’s, I used to wear more in cooler summer days. Whenever I get a new green juice scent first thing Polo Ralph Lauren t shirt comes to mind is this Polo green. Sillage and projection are quite strong, and longevity is easily 7-12 hours on my skin. “Ralph Lauren to Outfit Players at Wimbledon”. In the past, Wimbledon has done its own design of officials’ uniforms.
Not saying similar but it takes you on a journey. I’ll admit I don’t like the first phase of this that much and putting your nose right up to where it’s sprayed isn’t pleasant, it’s the cloud it surrounds you in that makes people take notice. It’s not a timeless scent, it is a very specific to its time scent, and that time is gone . This said, I would never ever wear this.
The first fragrance I’ve loved rather than just liked, before I was pretty disillusioned with what was on offer wrt modern fragrances, I think I might favour the older ones. This fragrance screams ‘Grandfather’ to me. It has a very classic scent that smells like a well put together older gentleman. It is a bit dated, but in a classic sense of the word. My only caveat is that the tobacco note is somewhere between the raw dried leaf and smoked cigarette smell. It becomes more evident on clothes as the day goes by.
