But those who grew tired of its ubiquitous presence 3 decades ago, should reassess Polo, having had enough time elapse to heal those wounds that result from our reactions to something all too familiar. (This can also be said for many popular “men’s powerhouse fragrances” from the late 70’s and 80’s). I have re-acquired many fragrances in the last 18 months that I once wore back in the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s, but let a couple of decades elapse before replenishing stock and wearing them again. Picked up a decant of this from Perfume.com, and have worn it 3-4 times.
Originally only available in one style and a variety of signature colors, the polo has since become available in numerous combinations and styles. Since launching his namesake company in 1967, designer Ralph Lauren has become the last word in all-American style. Polo Ralph Lauren, the brand’s original line, specializes in casual staples defined by quality fabrics and classic fits.
I suppose Polo is a true classic as it doesn’t smell dated or out of place to me compared to others that were released around polo dress shirts this time. It’s a bold, very masculine scent. It’s in the same vein as Quorum but comes off more classy and refined to me.
As it dries down you keep some of the “forest-y” smell from the pine, but the “green” smell dies down and evolves into tobacco notes. As a result I get a “grandpa’s humidor” vibe after the first couple hours. Like other reviewers said, it really smells like money, not the newer bills made of plastic (I’m Canadian, I don’t know how us bills are nowadays) but the old ones made of paper, like a big stack of it. It’s really powerful, I tested 4 different fragrances on different areas today and I can only smell Polo , I wish I didn’t bought the 240ml bottle, I’ll have enough for at least 3 lifetimes. I think if you are over 30 this is great, in my case it definitely gives me a good throwback in my childhood when I spray it.
For me, this is an easy fragrance to love. It’s deep green and herbal, a kind of spicy chypre. It smells like nature, very much like a forest (I’m not sure if the intention here was to evoke a polo playing field or meadow). This is the kind of fragrance that they don’t make now (unless it’s niche).
I work in a Polo store and EVERY employee who works in the store, no matter the age or sex, from 16 to 60, hates this smell, and dreads when someone tries it on. And so do the customers who have to shop in the store after it’s sprayed. It smells like the leather jacket of polo dress shirts a man who chain smokes cigars, rides his horse through the woods to his house where he cooks middle eastern cuisine over an open fire. And it lasts ALL DAY LONG. If it were toned down a little, and mixed with a little more of the floral, I’d probably really enjoy it.

My father wore this in the 80s, 90s. Wear it with a Polo shirt and aviator sunglasses or a pin stripe suit and power tie.
